I have always favored one six year term for president. I also favor term limits for legislators, maybe one 8 year term for senators and one five year term for congress. We need to get the "re=election" priority out of the system. What we do NOT need are a class of politicians who want to feather their nests at the public trough forever.
We always have the impeachement process to get rid of disasterously bad choices.
IF we ever adopted a six year term, I think we should have some sort of "no confidence" process to get rid of an underperforming president without going thru the impeachement process.
A six year term would allow a president to actually get something done without having to endure the political firestorm of "opposition for the sake of obstruction."
Democrats began their "defeat Bush" campaign before he was inaugurated. Everything that Bush did in his first term had to first get by the litmus test of "will this make it easier for him to be re-elected." Democrats opposed anything that would make Bush "look" good, even if it was good for the country.
There is no doubt in my mind at all that if Gore had won the '00 election, and had done EXACTLY the same things that Bush did, that the democrats would not only have NOT opposed him, they would have been CELEBRATING his wisdom, leadership, and courage.
The only reason for the acrimony of the democrats for Bush is that the his name was Bush.
A six year term would avoid this kind of partisan hypocrisy.
I am for it.
