Figured I would call on the vast resources of the DIS for this one.

DS is covered by my health insurance, but not for prescriptions. I can add him for $185/month. I was thinking that there has to be some less expensive alternatives out there and have actually found a few. BUT, I would feel much better if I heard of others that had used them.

Any want to share their experiences?

$185 for just rx seems really high. How often does your DS get Rxs? I think unless he is on major meds every month it wouldn't be worth it. Our full coverage plan isn't that much, check that price again.

Expensive and sounds useless. Other than my oldest needing prescription for her asthma, my prescription plan has never paid anything because stuff for kids for normal flu and infections usually cost less than my copay.

That's the price quoted to my by our human services administrator. I don't pay anything for DH and me, but because he is over 23 it will be $185/month. It doesn't cost me anything to have him covered for medical issues.

I think it also sounds expensive for just DS to get prescription coverage. If I thought for a minute he would need a lot of medicine, I'd jump on it, but I don't think he will.

So this is why I am wondering if anyone has used an alternate provider and what their experiences have been.

I know nothing about this ecxept the cards are on my countertop. My mom gave me these prescription drug cards from the National Association of School Nurses that the school nurse gave her. They were free cards, and their website is nasn.org. Maybe it's something that can help you?

If he's not on any medications I would pass on it. If he is, I'd do a cost analysis on what they cost versus what the coverage costs.

While I do have prescription coverage included in my medical premium, I don't use it much. I use Target pharmacy, where most generics are $4 for a 30 day supply, or $10 for a 90 day supply (their web site lists which ones are included at this price point). You don't have to sign up for it - that's just the way it works. Wal-Mart offers a similar deal, and I think most of the chain drugstores (CVS, Walgreens, etc) have something like this too.

Even if he needs a non-generic medication for something that might pop up, it's bound to be less than $185 per month.

Thanks so much for this information! I had no clue, since we've always had insurance that covers our prescription medications. I think this is exactly what we'll do!

If DS happens to get sick and needs a scrip, be sure to ask the doctor when he is writing and verify that he is writing something that comes in generic. Many times they will write a scrip for some expensive antibiotic assuming everyone has coverage when a generic Amoxicillin will do just fine.

and if you need a script filled- call around for prices. they vary and most pharmacies will price match!

You can check out rxcut.com. You can print out a card and check the different prices on medications based on where you live, they'll show you which pharmacies accept the card and how much the Rx would be at each pharmacy. This has saved us a ton of money recently.
