Help! I need quick ideas for "80's Day" tomorrow (I work in a school)! I've decided to do the preppy look, so I'm thinking of layering two polo shirts (collars up, of course), a sweater tied around my shoulders, and long jeans that I can roll up tat the bottom he way we used to back then. I don't have big plastic earrings or bracelets, but what else can I do?

I think you're doing good so far.
I can see some brightly colored socks and penny loafers with that, though I'm guess you don't have penny loafers in your closet:lmao:
How "BIG" can you get you hair ? How about some blue eye shadow.
Oh! and don't forget lip liner !

Sadly, my penny loafers are long gone. :sad1: :rotfl:

BUT - I have Tretorns!! I had completely forgotten about the bright socks. Hmm, might have to raid DD's sock drawer for those. And I could hit CVS on the way in to work and pick up some cheap blue eyeshadow.

Pearls with jeans - was that 80's or early 90's? I can't remember (guess I'm getting OLD, ha ha!)

I think you are all good- with the jeans- 2 polos collar up- tretorns sweater around the neck. Socks pushed down! Not folded over.

Headband? I used to wear a whale ribbon headband everyday! lol and then I also had a matching belt. :rotfl2:

Pearls with jeans was 80's I think. Although I am giggling about a Frankie Relax shirt! but that would involve neon type stuff vs. the prep look.

have fun

Yup, pearls with jeans is 80's. Do you happen to have about 100 plastic neon bracelets? You could wear them all at once on one arm! Make sure to layer your socks too, preferrably pink ones with white ones. That was my favorite color combo. And to go with the blue eyeshadow, how about some electric blue mascara? Yes, I actually used to wear that!

Yes - multiple layered socks......hair scrunchie if you pull your hair back (or multiples of those too)....really anything brightly colored and in multiples!! Have fun!!

YOu have to wear Khaki's, not jeans. The pegged jeans weren't really part of the preppy thing, at least not in our school. Anything Pink and Green is good too.

Headband is a must if you have long hair.

Argyle sweater and socks are good too.

Go to Goodwill and get some penny loafers.

The big bracelets, etc. are also not preppy. Pearls are.

Run out and see Hot Tub Time Machine! We went this past weekend, and the 80s fashions were KILLER!!! I can't believe I wore most of those (and yes, I did...)

Tease those bangs!

Terri

Or you could do the Cyndi Lauper look with the crinoline skirt, wild socks, wilder hair and gobs of jewelry. :teeth:

What? No leg warmers???!

Whatever you do, make sure those bangs stand straight up! :rotfl:

Big Hair!!!

Tease it, braid it tonight, anything. You need to get it big!

OK, so I went to Walmart and got the blue eyeshadow and also picked up a banana clip in case I can't get the big hair thing going (never even did it back then). Thanks for all the help! Can't wait to pull this all together tomorrow!

Do you have a monogrammed sweater?? LOL!!!

Don't forget to put a little alligator on your shirt if your shirts don't have one on already.

I should grab my Preppy Handbook & look thru it. Yes I had one & still have it!!

Gurrrrrrrrl! Double socks!

Anybody who was anybody did the double socks that matched the double polo's!

And hair should be big - yet, only clipped up on ONE side. THAT was 80's preppy around here.

Got any Keds laying around? :)

Peg those pants tight!

No Keds, Tretorns were the thing where I grew up, and I actually have a pair. :upsidedow

Ooooh. Totally awesome.

The side ponytail always works if big bangs can't be accomplished. :)

Do you still have access to an old bright yellow sony sports walkman? That's classic 80's (I too saw Hot Tub Time Machine this past weekend!). Though any portable cassette tape player will probably do.

Leg warmers?? Were those 80's and I remember sweatshirts that the neck was cut off and the bottom and the sleeves. Maybe I am thinking of flashdance! :confused3

Put a ribbon behind your ears and tie it at the top of your head. Think "early Madonna" look.

Preppy '80s fashions I wore:

Faire Isle sweaters
layered polos or a polo under an oxford cloth buttondown (Polo or Izod only)
khakis
plaid kilt skirt with the big safety pin closure
Pappagalo button cover purse
headbands worn with shoulder-length pageboy- bangs optional
pink and green color combo
corduroy Bermuda shorts
a sweater tied around your shoulders
navy sundress with little sailboats or whales embroidered all over it
wedge-heeled espadrilles
Topsiders
penny loafers
Add-A-Bead necklaces
Madras plaid skirt, Bermuda shorts, or pants
anything from the L.L. Bean catalog

Ahh, the good old days- the early '80s!! :cutie:
