Preparing yourself physically...

Get a job working in retail. Not only will you be used to A LOT of walking and standing, but you will have extra $$$ to spend!!

When I worked in retail it was not uncommon for me to log 20,000 + steps a day.

Forgot to mention that about a month before we go to DL I start walking with my kids around our neighborhood.
We walk briskly and pretend we are on our way to the next ride, each of us takes a turn choosing one. When we get to the corner the next person gets to choose a ride.
Keeps their mind off of the fact that they are exercising.
My little one usually goes in the stroller but hopefully this year we can use the stroller a little less. Stroller parking gets annoying after awhile, esp near POTC.

xtinabell- thanks for the foot stretching tip!

Does anyone have any good suggestions for shoes for wide feet with high arches?? I love the idea of changing shoes and with having a stroller to push, it'll be easier to carry!!

You can also put things in a locker if you don't want to lug them around in the stroller.

I second New Balance. I have very high arches, and my podiatrist recommended them. The other thing she has me in, are Super Feet insoles. They are expensive (I think I got my last pair off e-bay for around $20) but very worth it. I broke my foot a few years ago, and they have really helped.

I always remember what DL feels like when I spend the day at the state fair or a similar event. Lots of walking, stopping and standing. Oy! But I think you'll be fine with the walking you've been doing! I love the stretches that have been recommended here; great ideas. :thumbsup2

As others have mentioned, comfortable walking shoes will be your best friend. I myself, like to wear Tevas (DS6 calls them his Tivos... think somebody watches too much tv?) :-) or Keens when it's nice or comfortable tennis shoes if it's cooler.

As a hiker, who has done some longish hikes/backpacks (sometimes up to 15 miles a day), I'd also recommend trying to do some walking each day. It doesn't need to be extreme, but just try to get out and get your legs comfortable at a comfortable pace.

Also, drink plenty of water and eat when you need.

Pace yourself. Don't rush if you don't need to.

I find the bottom of my feet get sore but that is all. If i go back to the hotel i spray them with a cooling footspray and rest them.

Every evening i massage in some footcream too. Next morning absolutely fine.

On my last visit i took a pedometer with me and it measured the day as just over 12 miles. I was in the parks from magic morning opening at 7am (left hotel at 6.30am) until 11.30pm and was staying at the hojo. I went back to the hotel once during the day. I didn't feel like i as walking around all day either - plenty of queuing and sitting down in shows.

My feet are always KILLING me at the end of a day at DL. I have regained 25 pounds in the last 1 1/2 years and am determined to get that weight off before our upcoming trip. I am also starting to walk so my feet can build up a tolerance to all that pavement pounding! ;)

As far as shoes are concerned, I swear by my Crocs but on our last trip, I wore them without socks because I had capris on and they tore up my feet. I got huge blisters on the bottoms of my feet and had to use a ton of moleskin. I will NEVER wear my Crocs without socks again! That also means no Croc sandals for me. :(

Any sandal recommendations (I can't wear Tevas)? I have thought about Chacos or just my old Reef flip flops.

Try some Merrell sandals, they are very comfortable

I have the ones that are on the top right, they are very comfy, I usually wear them golfing and that's 3+ hours of walking.

For DL I would never dream of wearing sandals. Shoes that feel good for shopping may not feel good after walking all day. I also go along with the New Balance comment. They were also recommended to my son by the physical therapist when he was having knee trouble.

If you need new shoes before DL, buy them at least a month ahead of time. Wear them around and walk a lot in them to break them. I just wore my reg. New Balance walking shoes last trip for 3 days and did not get a single blister.

I second switching your shoes in the middle of the day. We always go back so the kids can nap. I usually wear thongs/sandals during the day and tennis shoes in the evening. Soak your feet and then stretching is always benefical.

Can I "fourth" the New Balance suggestion ? I, and three of my kids all have super wide feet (to match the wide heads...).

The only sneakers we fit into are the NBs - I was so thrilled to finally find a brand who makes a wide fitting !

I'll fifth the New Balance plug.... I won some just before our 2004 trip and were blown away by how great they were. Bought some new ones for 2006 trip and still great. Plus they just last and last, I still have both pairs, the 2004 ones looking really tired but I still wear them for grubby jobs.

My entire family lives loves their Chacos ! They are the best. Even better than birks. The have a higher , firmer arch than most sandals, and have "cross cutting" on the soles so that water doesn't make them slippery....both of those things (along with the toe strap) needs some breaking in a little at a time, or you will get sore feet.

Besides the arch, is the sole firm like Birks? I think I might need something softer.

Thanks everyone for the suggestion of NB's but I have a pair and tennis shoes just don't work for me with all that walking in nice weather. If it was cool and rainy, they would be great but not when it's warm. My feet need room and they need to breathe.

You have all been so helpful! Thank you!

Oooh! I love Merrells. I wear the ones on the bottom left all winter long. And when I am at DL I take 2 Aleve in the a.m. and two at night. You have to watch for stomach irritation but it helps me.

I agree about never wearing sandals to DL. The only time I ever wear any is if I switch into flip flops for Grizzly River. But I've only done that once or twice.

I've seen so many people in sandals, flip flops, and even high heels at Disneyland. and more often than not, their feet are also covered in bandaids and stuff...haha.

Well, I have to confess that I am not in very good shape and not as young as I used to be so 10 days of walking 10 miles a day can really be rough on my tootsies. 2 years ago I had some major pain with my Sciatic nerve. Year before last it was my shins that refused to cooperate. So last year I would have worn orthopedic shoes if it would have helped! I did come up with a solution that worked better than I had imagined. I convinced myself to wear those ugly old CROCS paired with compression socks. Wella! After 10 days my legs were good and even my feet were happy. Not very fashionable but it sure beats being nearly crippled! Sooo.... guess what I am packing this year?

I think what you're doing is good preparation but as soon as you get closer to your trip date, push yourself. Either do the same distance in less time or do the same distance at an incline.

Disneyland is not 100% walking, I'm not fit (currently trying to lose weight and get healthy) and I can do the walking just fine. What kills me is the standing in line. That's when my sciatic nerve starts bothering me and I start feeling the tiredness.

Talking about crocs made me think of this cat picture...haha!

The amount of walking doesen't bother me.......but i always get shin splints because of the hard surfaces I am walking on, as I am used to walking inside or on dirt paths. I second a hot bath and lots of stretching each night, I also take ibuprofen twice a day, even if i am not hurting, just to pro-actively help with the inflammation that leads to shin splints etc.

You are one smart cookie!!! Thanks! I agree, I will try that (advil, etc.) the next time - I got shin splints on our last trip,(which was great when it had settled down for the last 2 days, sigh, wish it could have happened sooner but I didn't even think to take advil - DUH! :lmao: ) and currently have plantar fasciitis so an really concerned!! My Dr. Scholl's heel insert for pain seems to help, though, so I will bring those along on next trip, as well as gel heel pads for heel pain.

One time in DL, I got blisters on the bottom of both of my feet. Ouch! (My shoes were too big, and my feet slid too much as I walked.) I had broken in my shoes, but, this long walking, all day, was just too much, in so many ways.

The next visit, I got shin splints first, and then a really, really bad pain in my feet that would hit moments after sitting. I remember being almost in tears during the POTC ride, as after about 5 min., the pain would start up... Getting off of the ride was hideous by the time my feet stopped throbbing, it was time to walk again, off of the ride.

The last vist to DL, my feet swelled up during the day, I think, or else my shoes were a tad small, and I ended up brusing both of my toenails, and a few months later they waved good-bye to me. Actually, I had listened to advice as to what kind of socks to wear as to not get blisters, and it appears the socks took up too much shoe room, as they were thick socks??

My strategy for the next trip will be:

1.) No cotton only socks - special wool type blend, natural fibres. BUT large enough shoes to accommodate that!
2.) BLISTER preventative pads - look like bandaids, but stay on feet for up to 5 days, and can prevent or help to heal painful blisters (luckily we have a 5 day park hopper pass :rotfl: ) AND Avon blister friction creme.
3.) ICE the feet at night, no matter what!! (The hotel has ice machines for all! :flower3: )
4.) Take the iboprofren twice daily - excellent, excellent suggestion!!! Thanks!! :)
5.) Bring along 2 different pairs of shoes - when one pair starts doing serious damage, switch to another pair the next day! Better yet, alternate days.
6.) Heat rub (A535) and cooling gel rub for the feet, not to use both at the same time, of course, but use one or the other at the end of the day...

I am pooh sized - wear around size 16 for clothes - and really found the walks around the park all day long to be very painful. My husband and kids did not find it difficult at all. I am not in shape, as in, don't work out daily, but have been walking the kids to and from school daily to get my body used to more activity before our trip. I do think that pooh sized people will have more painful feet, etc. So hopefully some of these suggestions will be helpful to you guys, and if you have any more suggestions for anyone who suffers painful feet, etc., keep them coming, please! Thanks!! :)

Edited to add: Would not your toes bump into the front of the crocs?? Are they really that comfy? Can dollar store type substitutute crocs work o.k.? Do you get lots of static shocks for wearing them? My daughter and I were shocked a lot one day in store, and didn't know why - my husband told us it's because the soles of our shoes were NOT made of rubber - he was right!!

Also -where can one buy compression socks?? Are they healthy enough to use?

Sandals - OUCH!!! I've had too many people step on my toes (Literally, not figuratively, LOL!) while in a que - I think that would be dangerous for an almost ingrown toenail? Or even for a reg. toenail?)

Sciatic nerve pain can be soooo bad!!! DH has it from time to time and it takes a long time for it to settle down. :( Good luck with yours!
