Titanic’s Officer Wilde was uneasy about sailing on the Titanic. Especially just before sailing. He said, “I still don’t like this ship… I have a queer feeling about it.”

Supposedly that statement was made in a letter he wrote. Unfortunately the letter was sold at auction around 2016 and the person who purchased it has not made the contents public. The quote was mentioned in the lot description for the auction, and the auction was handled through a high end auction house that specializes in Titanic memorabilia, so it is unlikely that their description is inaccurate. What we don’t know is the context of the statement. Other known letters sent by Wilde show him praising the Titanic and comparing her favorably with the Olympic, with no mention of a premonition of the sinking. The context of the letter in question might show that the quote has been misinterpreted or that something occurred to make him change his mind about the ship.

There have been rumors that other passengers and crew, including Captain Smith, had bad feelings about the voyage, but most of those have been disproven over the years. It would be interesting to read the Wilde letter to see if the alleged premonition is fact or fiction.
