I was looking at a points chart (I'm considering renting points from an owner) and was wondering if someone could please clarify this terminology for me. There is a clear point difference between the two - I just can't figure out what it means!

Thanks!

You must be referring to BoardWalk Villas. Standard is a view of the front valet area, road leading there, parking lot or tennis court. Preferred is everything else -- boardwalk view, pool view, garden view. Standards are often difficult to get unless you reserve 11 months out because they make up only about 20% of the rooms and need fewer points. Room size does not differ between standard and preferred.

When BWV opened and early in sales, all rooms were one price. People that stayed in certain parts, such as those that faced the parking lot, complained. So DVC changed the points structure to allow those type views to be less points. IF you think of the standard as being less than the preferred, rather than the reverse, you'll get a good feel for this situation and not expect too much from the "preferred" options.

At BWV, the area overlooking the front entrance is standard view. 20%

The rest of the resort is preferred view. (20% overlooks the boardwalk; 60% overlooks the pool, the canal, or the village green.)

Oddly, the regular, preferred view (60%) is the least preferred view at the resort.

Dh and I have stayed in both BW view and Standard view rooms at BWV, and are quite pleased with both. The BW view is spectacular, and the std. view is really quite nice. Our std. view was primarily of a grassy area with a parking lot in the distance.

I believe AKV also has std. rooms. Can anyone comment about these rooms?

For AKV standard means non savannah view but also excludes the value and concierge rooms. They could be pool or parking lot view.
