My opinion would be based on the situation. Are you driving or flying? From where and to where?

We are sailing on the Dream in December too. We will be driving from MA so we are stopping and spending the 2 days before the cruise in WDW, then will drive down to FT Lauderdale the morning of the cruise. Then back to WDW for 3 days before heading home.

And are you flying cross country or from not too far? What time of day are you supposed to land in FLL?

Assuming you are flying into FLL, I would stay some where in that area. When we sailed out of Port Everglades before we stayed at the Cambria FT Lauderdale (airport and cruise port). It's actually in Dania Beach, about 6 miles from the port. It's not the closet hotel to the port, but the price was right and it turned out to be a very nice hotel. We loved our room (2 tvs!) and were very surprised how nice it was for the price. I would definitely stay there again.
