Pre-paid Cellphones Question

We have two Tracfones...one for me and one for my DD. Both have worked great for a few years now, except once...and it was in a valley of Western Mass. !
My step-son has Virgin Mobile, has good reception, but he's always running out of minutes...he talks on it like he's using a land line!

I also use Virgin and I love it- Its perfect for the use I need and its worked everywhere from Disneyland to WDW to Port Canaveral
