Because the way my flights worked out I fly in to Honolulu Wednesday April 12 at 8pm and check into Aulani on Sat April 15th.

I am wait listed but any recommendations on a place to stay for the 3 nights? We are a family of 5.

Not really interested in Honolulu . I was thinking of spending time on the North Shore or even Ewa but everything is pricey. Maybe VRBO too but dont know. Open, flexible and don't want to break the bank.

There is a new Hampton Inn that has just opened this fall in Kapolei. I think it is good value for the money but it is seriously not a tropical getaway type of place-standard Hampton Inn with a tiny pool and free breakfast. The price I see for your dates is approx $200/night but only if you plug in 2 kids to the search engine. I guess 3 puts it over the max capacity so you would need to find out about a roll away https://secure3.hilton.com/en_US/hp/reservation/book.htm?execution=e1s3

Another option is the Courtyard Marriott up in the North Shore which offers 2 queens and a pull out for $250 for your dates.

You can also get some very good prices through VRBO at turtle Bay condos

We love the contrast between the Turtle Bay area and Aulani. The Turtle Bay resort is comparable in price to hotel rooms at Aulani, but you can rent a condo near the golf course for half the price from individual owners. They have pools and the beach is a short walk away. It isn't a resort (the pools don't have slides or activities), but it might be a nice home base for exploring the North Shore.

I know you said you're not into Honolulu, but we stayed at the Marriott Waikiki before Aulani and it worked out well for us. We took a cab there from the airport to the hotel. We were able to walk the Waikiki strip and take advantage of the Waikiki shopping trolley to go up to Ala Moana Center. We also did tours to Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head that included transportation that picked us up from our Waikiki hotel. We got a rental car once we got to Aulani, and since we did everything we wanted in the Waikiki area already, we were able to avoid the crazy traffic and parking difficulties/costs in that area as well. At the Aston Waikiki which is next door to the Marriott, there is a Wolfgang Puck Express where we had a quick and inexpensive dinner and breakfast. It was the same as the one at Disney Springs!

We have rented twice now through VRBO for our pre-Aulani stays. Nice places for a family with kitchen and usually free parking. Always have made out fine renting through them both in Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
