TLDR: Any opinions on staying at Hilton Garden Inn Waikiki prior to Aulani? Found a reasonable rate for a 2-double suite with a sofa sleeper.

We will be going to Ohau in August and are a family of 4 with a 15 year old son and 12 year old daughter. The trip will be 9 nights and I've booked a 1-bedroom villa at Aulani for the final 4 nights. I'd love to do all nights at Aulani, but it just doesn't fit in the budget.

I currently have the first 5 nights booked at Hilton Garden Inn Waikiki in a suite with 2 double beds and a sofa sleeper in another room for $331 per-night. Our children much prefer not having to share a bed so it was important to us to have 3 "beds". As far as I can tell this place is decent. Small pool, but close enough to walk to the beach. Anyone have any experience with this hotel good or bad? I know the room is likely to be small. We've been on 4 of the Disney cruise ships in the standard family rooms and survived so I'm not super concerned about the size - we'll get more space at Aulani at the end of the trip.

Also, if there are any other alternatives we should consider please let me know. We've got until June to cancel the Hilton and could rebook somewhere else.

The beaches within the proximity is meh, but at that age (kids), it’s all about sharing the sights on their social media accounts. For the hotel, it’s kind of out of the way of Waikiki. Try take a look at Alohilani Resort, Waikiki Resort Hotel, or Aston Waikiki Beach Tower. The beaches on Kalakaua Ave. are more enjoyable and not as crowded as those by the other areas because of limited shoreline. If you can afford it, Outrigger On The Reef is good as well as Waikiki Shores but the beaches will be tight but at least your room is right there!

I'm a huge fan of the Surfjack. We stay there 2-3 nights before aulani to stay up "late" in Waikiki and do one trip to to the windward side before heading to Aulani. Surfjack is near eggs and things, a park and easy to get to Waikiki but back a bit so it isn't crazy. Also cute pool, great staff, etc. Not beachfront but that's what Aulani is for :)

For Waikiki, I think it's one of the better options/values available. The area is walkable and has plenty of places to eat.

I always recommend pricing out a rental condo/VRBO at Turtle Bay resort. You can get some good deals on 1 and 2 br condos.

That sounds like a good price. Could check out Hyatt place. I think Twin Fin has rooms with 3 beds too.

I'd look into the Sheraton Waikiki and see if the price matches what you want. Right on the beach and centrally located in Waikiki. Great hotel. We also stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village but didn't like it as much.
