Prayers for my Mom - Update Post #47 NOT Yay :(

Whee ... :yay: :yay: :yay: Mom does NOT have a bowel obstruction and is NOT going to need surgery :cool1:  :cheer2:

The Lasix is doing its job and has significantly reduced the fluid around her heart and in her lungs. Her resting heart rate is now staying level at around 68 - 72, instead of jumping from 76 - 94 every other second.

The blood in the right side of the brain is dissolving, as well as the extra fluid that was pushed over to the left side.

All of the above is FANTASTIC news, however we are still concerned about her mental status. She seems extremely confused and when you talk to her she just sort of looks at you like you are speaking some foreign language. I fully understand that her brain took quite a hit when she fell and she did have some dementia before the fall, but the last couple of days she seems to be drifting into oblivion. I am going to try and get the "Hospitalist" to bring in mom's neurologist, as she knows how mom was before the fall and she might be able to tell us how much of this is because of the fall and how much of it is because of the Parkinson's.

Thank you all for your continued prayers, :goodvibes and loads and loads of pixiedust:

Well, we got the call from the Discharge Planner at the hospital saying that the Dr had decided that mom was stable enough to be transferred to a skilled nursing facility for *extensive* physical therapy. :woohoo: :woohoo: She does have to have another cat scan within the next 7 - 10 days to see if the fluid has *stopped* building up on the left side of the brain, but this is the first step towards coming home.

I had a battle with the Dr as he was NOT prescribing the medications that she generally takes at home and are medications that she should have been taking this whole time :headache: I told him "if you feel she is ready to be transferred for PT to help get her back home, then *part of getting her back home* is to have her on the medications she supposed to be." After about 30 minutes of going back and forth with him, I finally got *my way* :cool1: So, this is a HUGE step for mom and more than likely she will be there for about 4 - 6 months.

I am praying that she will be able to come home, but it also depends on how well they can get her walking, the Parkinson's is pretty advanced, and *IF* dad will be able to continue caring for her. My brother and his family are coming out next month some time, so we will sit down and talk with dad and try to come to an agreement as to "what is best for mom!"

Again, :thanks: for your continued support :goodvibes

I've only just found this thread and I'm soooo sorry to hear about your Mom. You guys really have been through the mill. I pray that your Mom will get better soon. It's great to read that she is already on the mend.
You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers

Just a quick catch up - Mom was finally transferred to a Skilled Nursing Facility where she is receiving physical and occupational therapy. After only 2 days there, she was readmitted to the hospital for chest pains and stayed there for 5 days. As of today, July 10, she is just learning how to walk all over again, sometimes her left leg just does not get the signal to move, so I think the Parkinson's and the severe trauma to the brain are going to make this quite a feat for her and do not expect her to return home for quite a few months. She does have days where she looks at you as if you are speaking a different language, so I think the dementia is getting worse as well :worried:

I came down to my parents on Saturday, July 7th Mom's birthday, to stay for the week, as mom had to go have a cat scan on her brain yesterday and then a Drs appt today. My presence was needed for both appts, as dad's memory seems to be going downhill, he's not taking care of himself, and he is VERY wrapped up in trying to get in and see mom EVERY DAY ... but I am always coming down to give him a MUCH NEEDED break !! I am having a procedure on my back on the 20th, so I will not be able to return to my parent's until the first part of August :sad1: Hopefully, dad will listen to mom when she says "you don't need to come in everyday!"

This is going to be a bit of a rant, my apologies ahead of time !!

The Drs appt she had today was with the neurosurgeon who was following her when she was in the hospital. The blood she had on the right side and center of the brain was dissolving, however she had a HIGH increase in fluid building up on the left side. Anyway, we got the cat scan done yesterday and headed out this morning to see the Dr, but when we got there problem #1 hit us, there was NO ONE who could help us get mom out of the car and into a wheelchair and they said the skilled nursing facility should have sent a CNA with us, WRONG :headache: Problem #2 - they sent mom to the "county hospital", for those without medical insurance (not a problem, she has the best) rather than to the Drs private office  Problem #3 - The Dr would NOT even take the cat scan images to check them to see if the fluid is still building

So, I went over to mom's Neurologist, who handles her Parkinson's Disease, and explained todays entire episode to the Drs nurse who said "not a problem!! The Dr will look at them and I will call you to let you know the results and if your mom needs to be seen before July 26th. Whew, what a relief that was, as dad said mom will NEVER go back to that neurosurgeon :scared:

Now to top ALL of this off, my brother who lives just outside Denver is coming out August 9th, staying for about 24hrs and then taking his 3 kids, 15 - 20 yrs old, camping. There are MUCH MORE IMPORTANT things that require him to be here longer. #1 He has not seen my parent's in 5 yrs !!!!  #2 We need to discuss the possibility of mom NOT being able to come back home. #3 Dad needs knee replacement surgery, has macular degeneration in his right eye, and now glaucoma :worried: #4 Why does ALL of this need to be put on me ? Please do not get me wrong on that last issue, I would do ANYTHING for my parents and so would my husband. In fact, he will be taking 30 days vacation & hoping to qualify for Unemployment Insurance and we are moving down here by my parent's ASAP !!

Thank you for your continued prayers :goodvibes thoughts and pixiedust: and for letting me RANT :flower3:

Aww Tigger! So sorry to hear you are having such a rough time with everything again :( I will keep you and your family in my thoughts more so once again. Remember though also that while you have to help your dad to take care of himself be sure to do the same for you. I feel so bad that your brother does not seem more concerned in helping out. Sending lots of Pixie Dust your way to help you get through all of this. pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust:
