My youngest niece was diagnosed with diabetes today. She is in the hospital getting evaluated and learning how to handle everything. Her dad, my BIL is diabetic so the family knows what to expect, but she is just turning 13 and will need time to get her brain wrapped around the whole thing. We won't even talk about getting her parents brains wrapped around it. Mom and I are going to visit her in the hospital tomorrow.

Thanks,
Kim

We will be thinking of her and all your family. It is a tough thing to have to deal with at such a young age, but at least it is manageable.

Aw, pixie dust from me! A good friend has a daughter who was diagnosed at nine. It's hard, but her life is as normal as can be! She works with a pump and that has made things a lot easier for her.

Been there too, but at 13 there are lots of added struggles than we had at 2 - maybe different struggles is a better way to phrase it. Since you know what to expect, I will just say hang in there.

sending your niece and your family pixie dust Kim pixiedust:

having to face something that you will have to deal with for the rest of your life at the age of 13 is certainly not easy!

Since tomorrow is Sunday and they don't do any education on Sundays and the medical folks know they can trust my sister and BIL to know what to do with my niece, she is getting an afternoon/evening pass tomorrow. Her current blood sugar readings are good. So I think we are on the road to the new road in her life.

Pixie dust and prayers for your niece and all the family in adjusting to the change.

As someone diagnosed in his teens with type 1 diabetes, it isn't easy. To know what the unsweetened population lives like and then have it taken away is cruel.

But I know she will have a strong support network of family, so that will help her. Please give her my best.

On a side note, after I was done practicing giving shots to the orange in the hospital, I threw it at the wall.
