I had many pets as a kid and at an early age I learned how hard it was too loose a dog. We were at my grandparents in Orlando when I was 2-3. We went to the dog pound on Kirkland road and got a puppy! Back at my grandparents I took a nap. When I woke up my cousin told me the puppy was dead. I thought he was just being mean. They had taken the puppy in the front yard to do his business and he just ran from them right into the street.

One of the toughest things I have done as an adult is getting a new dog for ME. It took me a long time to decide to pick up The Puppy out of the litter. Why? Because at some point I knew I would loose the dog. I knew what that was like.

That puppy I took home and named Kelly. She is the best dog I have ever brought home. She had a great life and brought great joy to us. But she got old as I knew she would. Eventually she got to a point where she was having problems walking and getting up. She always had to be near me and even with the walking problem that did not stop. She then had problems controlling her bowls. No problem. We have finished concrete floors for just this reason. I spent a year getting very little sleep and cleaning up messes at 2:00am in the morning. It was the least I could do for Kelly.

At some point you know when it is time. When the dog is suffering and it needs to stop. I knew when it was time to do what I knew I would have to do the day I saw Kelly in the litter. It still SUCKED.

Our current vet lives in our subdivision. She came to our house so we could end Kelly's suffering at home. Kelly struggled but she got off her bed and greeted the vet when she came into the house. I told Kelly to lay back down. She did. Then we said goodbye and she suffered no more.

For other pet owners, when it gets to be The Time, be aware many vets will make house visits. One may not want to do this at home but if you have a large, sick dog it is so much better to not have to move them. We have had the vets come to our house twice for this reason.

It still is a kick upside the head when one has to deal with this.
