hmmmm-many good ideas here- I have TONS of chips (had to cancel a party planned for this weekend:scared1: LOTS of ice (party) and plenty of cold cereal, peanuts, etc etc. Plus water. we'll survive, even if we eat unusual foods for a week!:thumbsup2 oh,and did I mention lots of soda? (party:lmao:) the kids will be SO happy with this menu!:rotfl:

A little off topic but make sure all your laundry is done!

I have many fond memories as a teenager with our neighbors after Hugo. We had 2 weeks of no elelctricity. Everyone shared food. We had steaks and big pots of chili and stews. LOL We spent many hours playing board games and bonding.

Thinking about all of you in Irene's path. We were lucky this time and she passed us quietly last night. You will be in our thoughts.

I heard a suggestion to turn down the temp in both your freezer and refrigerator so everything will be really cold if power goes out. We also cranked down the a/c. The anticipation is something huh!;)

Great ideas everyone!
Here in CT and just waiting....and waiting.

Crossing our fingers its not too bad.

We're in RI just waiting at this point. I have BBQ chicken in the crock pot and will pull it apart so we can have sandwiches until the rain stops, then we will grill whatever is left in the freezer. I baked breads and cookies, have frozen pancakes, fruits and veggies, PB &J and lots of snack type things that together could amount to an unusual meal (i.e. crackers, pretzels, granola bars). We have very young kids so I wanted to make sure I had enough on hand that will sustain them. Our 1 yr old is a very picky eater. UGH. I'm sure hoping we are doing all this prep for nothing but reports indicate otherwise. Stay safe everyone!!

In advance of Irene, we are anticipating 2-3 days without power. What ideas can you suggest, on a budget, for meals? DH won't eat tuna, we have bread, PB&J, I'll make some pasta salad that can be kept on ice or eaten at room temp made with oil & vinegar. I just can't think of other non-perishables. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Signed, in the path of Irene in a power outage prone area ;-)

I just had dh pick our supplies up. I got hamburg to make meatloaf and have for sandwhiches. A lb of ham, turkey, cheese. We have a gas stove; so chicken and tomatoe soup.

Salsa and chips

"cheese, crackers with a bottle of wine we have" :hippie:

Nardones pizza; cold sqr's that you heat or eat cold

Mrs T's Pierogies again a gas stove

we have a generator too, so very lucky. As the weather is too bad to get out, this is what we plan being stuck inside.

I love a SAMs Club rotessier chicken, even cold it is great and only $5

I expect to lose power so I stocked up on PB and bread, spaghetti and sauce, spaghettios and ramen noodles for the kids, baked beans and soup mixes that only need water. We have a camp stove so those things will be easy to prepare. I have a gas grill so I'll use whatever meat is in the freezer before it goes bad.
I'm baking today to use up the eggs but I have a freezer full of ice to put into a cooler so we can have cold milk and whatever else we want to throw in there.

Other ideas to cook ahead and eat cold:

Hard boiled eggs - can make into egg salad or deviled eggs or just eat whole
Potato salad
BBQ Chicken legs - always good cold
Pizza - it's a dorm staple but you can eat it when grown too .

On a grill you can also heat water to make oatmeal. Or grilled pizza. We have a camp stove and a small backing stove and will use those under our overhang if the power goes out. DH wanted tacos tonight and I said "saving that for tomorrow. Taco meat is very easy to make on a camp stove."

I keep hearing this and I don't get it - what will you use this water for? Curious. For drinking, I'm bottling water.

I read earlier that someone needed power to get water? So, bath tub water equals water to flush, maybe?

Yep. We use the bathtub water for non-drinking reasons... washing, toilet etc...

Even if you have town/city water, the pumps have to be working to get the water to you. If they go down, you won't have water. So we picked up bottled water to drink and will fill the tubs and containers for other needs.
