one of my son's medications is a white powder. Instead of bringing the whole bottle (2month supply) I was just going to pack in ziploc bags individual doses. Do I have to declare powder meds? Will I have a problem with security? Wondering about baby powder too?

There aren't any restrictions on powdered meds, but you could be subject to additional screening. It is better to travel with the prescription in the marked bottle with the script label on it. Could you transfer most of the medicine to another container to leave at home and take enough for your trip in the actual prescription bottle?

I wouldn't put them in the zip lock bags because if they see whit powder in a ziplock bag they are going to thing it cocane. We would not want to see you get in trouble for your kids meds. Because if they think it drugs you will have to deal with the police and they will have to find out what is so they will test it to find out what it is. It will proberly mean you might miss your flight and makeing you go through more trouble then it is to bring the meds in the bottle and then bring zip lock bags and seprate the dose in disney. If you bring the baby powedr in the bottle you will be fine.

I am sorry to give wrong info i went on tsa.gov and they say they dont require meds to be labled so ou should be fine i would still suggest you carry them in the bottle. Just in case which i know proberly wont happen but if you get pulled over they might think it something else. There police that would believe you since your not lying but there are some police that will still want to test it to make sure. Once agin sorry for giving bad info i just figured it wouldnt be okay.

Medications

All medications in any form or type (for instance, pills, injectables, or homeopathic) and associated supplies (syringes, Sharps disposal container, pre-loaded syringes, jet injectors, pens, infusers, etc.) are allowed through the security checkpoint once they have been screened. Atropens, an auto-injection system that can help treat many emergency conditions (low heart rate, breathing problems, and excess saliva related to insecticide, nerve gas or mushroom poisoning) are also allowed.

We do not require that your medications be labeled.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) migraine inhalers and CO2 refills.

Medications in daily dosage containers are allowed through the checkpoint once they have been screened.

Medication and related supplies are normally X-rayed. However, as a customer service, TSA now allows you the option of requesting a visual inspection of your medication and associated supplies.

You must request a visual inspection before the screening process begins; otherwise your medications and supplies will undergo X-ray inspection.
If you would like to take advantage of this option, please have your medication and associated supplies separated from your other property in a separate pouch/bag when you approach the Security Officer at the walk-through metal detector.
Request the visual inspection and hand your medication pouch/bag to the Security Officer.
In order to prevent contamination or damage to medication and associated supplies and/or fragile medical materials, you will be asked at the security checkpoint to display, handle, and repack your own medication and associated supplies during the visual inspection process.
Any medication and/or associated supplies that cannot be cleared visually must be submitted for X-ray screening. If you refuse, you will not be permitted to carry your medications and related supplies into the sterile area.

While the TSA does not require medications to be labeled, my concern is that unidentified white powder in ziplock baggies might raise some eyebrows at security. I doubt it would go to the point where they would call the police in, but you could be pulled aside for additional screening which would be a pain in the posterior. I just think you are less likely to go through any hassles by keeping the powder in the original container.

Your right I think he be better off bring them in the bottle for that reason. I just did want him to think it because TSa would not allow it through in something different then the bottle. He could buy front target plastic pill box that will separate them the same way but look more legal.

That would also be my concern.
When TSA is writing about medications not needing to be labeled, they are probably thinking pills because that is how most medication is provided.
You could also ask your pharmacy to label a smaller bottle for you thst is more appropriate for the amount you are bringing. That is nit usually a problem.

I think I'll just bring the whole bottle, dh wants to bring a couple extra days worth of medical supplies, which I think is a good idea anyway. My question now is do I even have to make security aware of thefact that we have powdered meds or can I just keep it in my bag with the pills?

No you do not have to make TSA aware of your medications. Just put them through the scanner with your carry on luggage. If they want to ask about it they will. I don't think you'll have any problems.

Agreed. TSA would be BEYOND stupid not to treat a powered substance in ziplock bags as suspected cocaine or other smuggled drugs. As the saying goes; if it walks like a duck, quack likes a duck and looks like a duck....... In this case it aint Donald, but TSA'ld better treat it as 'Donald' until they know for sure it aind any of the Duck family.

Do yourself a huge favor and transport it in the original container with label on it etc. If the size of it is a hassle; talk to your pharmacist. They might be able to help you out by supplying smaller bottles you can use with a label on them.

While it's a different animal as I come from outside the US to WDW, I will never ever travel with powdered meds or foodsupplements without them in their original container/package. Let alone remove it and put it into ziplock bags. From checks I've had, I can only say I'm glad I do. It's a breeze getting through if things are overly clear, but if they're not it can turn ugly or at least long lasting.

You. Have the right to have them to inspect your med my hand if you don't want then X-ray but you have to let them know before it get x-rayed. It you don't have a problem with them being x rayed then your fine. It won't hurt letting them know ahead of hand as your about to put the bags in to be xrayed just so they don't say anything it no one else bis what you have in yor bags.

Just an idea....

I went to our local pharmacy (a mom and pop type place vs big chain place) and they made up several little bottles with proper labeling for any medication that I wanted to have ON the plane. Everything else went under the plane.

I'm torn with what to tell you over this.

Pills are easily identifiable with the right reference, by their color, shape, and markings on them. White powder looks like white powder though so that'd be weird getting through security with it. At the same time, someone could take a labeled bottle of a powder medicine and fill it with cocaine.

I think they'll be more trustful of you if you can take it in the real bottle with legit labels on it, rather than a baggie.

Any pharmacy will do this- we use Walgreens and my hubby has special ointments that he has to use, and it comes in a gigantic glass jar. After being stopped by TSA multiple times during flying for my conferences right after the restrictions on gels on planes, he was talking to one of the pharmacy techs at the Walgreens we always use, and they made up labels and put them on small prescription bottles normally used for pills. When we travel, he just transfers the ointments into the appropriate bottle with the lid on tight, and off we go- he's not been stopped since.

I've also been stopped at different times for insulin in injector pens, lancelets and for small cap needles that go on those pens- they were clearly labeled but set off alarms for whomever was running the X-Ray machine that day. It just depends on who you get. I do try and let the TSA people know, but sometimes they don't understand or don't care.

I have to disagree with this. I would never, ever put my medications under the plane. They go in my carry-on bag. I would not take the chance that my luggage is lost or delayed in getting to me. I take a lot of medications. And many of the maintenance ones I am required to order in three month supplies by my drug plan. It would be a nightmare to replace them while on vacation. Same goes for medical supplies like my glucometer, test strips, lancets, needles, etc. They go with me at all times. I use a gallon zip loc bag to keep things together, except for the pills that I put in a seven day pill organizer (actually two organizers since I take two extra days supplies with me and we usually go for eight days).

If I took a powdered medication, I would probably bring it in an original bottle though. Not so much the cocaine thing - the TSA will tell you that they are not the police, they are just concerned with security. But I would worry that they would think it might be anthrax since there were so many scares over that in the past.

Totally agree! Besides; you never know who gets into your luggage between checking it in and seeing it again. It only takes one rotten TSA-apple and the meds 'mysteriously' disappear. And also remember bagage can encounter temperatures way below those that meds are supposed to be in. In the main cabin, that will not be an issue.

Medical stuff is nothing to take any 'gamble' with. Keep them within eyesight.

They are cranky cranky people in the TSA. I used to be married to one who felt his day was not complete if he did not make a few people cry. Anyways white powder heck yes keep it in a marked container. If they are in a mood they will hold you up for the entertainment of it.

Also not all airports play by the same rules. They claim that they should but its well known that they do not. Atlanta for example is famous for taking things too literally. Its the most complained about airport.

Besides being cocaine white powder could be a number of other unidentified things in those sickos minds so better safe than sorry.

Tell it, I have had my meds stolen by TSA. Of course they deny such allegations and blame it on airline personnel after them. Isn't it nice they have such scapegoats for their thievery.
