Potty training while traveling...cool trick!

My 21 mo dd is gung ho on potty training. The only problem is that she freaked out whenever I put her on a regular toilet. I just went out and bought a folding toilet cover thing to carry in the diaper bag, but fortunately I haven't used it yet. Someone at church gave me a better idea! Instead of putting her facing forward on the toilet seat, put her facing backward with her bottom on the front of the toilet seat. She's much more secure that way, since her bottom isn't floating in space over that big hole full of water. She goes to the potty just fine this way. I may even get rid of our little potty chair at home.

This brought back some memories of our first trip to Disney World as a family. Our youngest DD wast 3 almost 4 and had been potty trained for quite a while. We drove down from Illinois and for some reason she decided she didn't like public toliets at all! Everytime we stopped we tried to get her to go but she would get in there and change her mind. She is my most stubborn child. She held it all day. Even when we stopped at a hotel she wasn't sure she was going to go.

I always try to get the handicap bathroom and put my child on the seat sideways so she can hold onto the bar instead of the toilet seat. She feels a little more secure and I'm not as grossed out with her hands all over the seat!

My DD was potty trained at 20 months and we also bought one of those fold up travel seats. they are wonderful!!! Your little one does not have to touch the public toilet at all. I carried mine in my purse everywhere!!

The fold-up ones are great! My DD2 is potty training right now and I think I'm going to take one of those with us to WDW. As soon as I walk into a bathroom stall with my kids, the first words out of my mouth are, "Don't touch the toilet seat." We always wash hands after using the restroom, but I just don't like for them to touch the seats with their hands.

We just spent two days at Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Water Country USA, and I did end up using the fold-up potty seat after all. BounceyOne and B3LM, you're absolutely right about the cleanliness thing. I had done the backwards on the seat thing at home and at church, where I know the toilets are fairly clean. I hadn't really thought about in real public places! I was glad I had the fold-up one with me. It really is small and light enough to go in the diaper bag!

FYI..the sitting backwards trick works great for little guys who are too short (or uncoridinated) to stand and pee pee.

One other word of advice for parents of newly trained little ones. We went last May, when DS was rarely if ever having accidents, but he couldn't "hold it" for too long. I learned the hard way that it's a lot longer then you think before you exit a ride. Even with fairly short lines, by the time you add the line and the actual ride and exit, it's quite a long time for a little one. Make sure you ask them if they have to go before every ride. I ended up with too many wet laps that trip.

Please keep in mind that there is usually only one handicapped stall per bathroom and that anyone with a handicap who needs it doesn't have the choice to use a different stall.
When my DDs were little, we did use one of the fold-up seats. It worked well even with my youngest DD who has cerebral palsy and is not the steadiest at sitting on a toilet.

What is the fold up potty seat? And where can I buy one?

DisneyInDecember, I got my fold-up potty seat for less than $10 at Toys R Us. It's a hard plastic seat (fairly small) that folds into four parts and fits into a zip-lock back so that you can carry it in your diaper bag. When the child has to go potty you just unfold it and put it on the big toilet.

I just got a One step ahead catalog last night and they have the foldable potties and they have a weight limit of 40 lbs. My dd will be 2 1/2 next month and has very little interest in potty training. My problem is this. She's already 37.5 lbs. I'm afraid if I order this potty she'll be too big for it when it comes time to use it. Anyone know of another foldable potty that has a higher weight limit??

there are 2 different kinds that i have seen. I have the safty 1st one that has the blue carrying pouch. It is a ok but a little flimsy. The other one that I have seen seems to be thicker plastic, it might be by right start.
