Potty training question

My son is almost 3 and is potty training. He does well as long as we remind him to go about every 30 mins or so. He still has some accidents though, even with reminders. He does wear pull-up on car trips, and for naps and night-time. He has no issues with wearing them and we still remind him to go potty even when he has a pullup on. We are arriving on Sunday. I am prepared to spend a lot of time running back and forth to the bathroom, and to take a couple of changes of clothes with me to the parks in case of accidents. But he will not poop in the potty. I know this is normal, but he goes a couple of times a day and I do not want to be carrying around the dirty underwear around the park. Am I going to be a bad mommy if I put him back in pullups while we are at the parks? We will still go potty frequently - I just want to be able to toss the dirty pullups away.

You will not be a bad mommy...if he still uses the potty with a pull up, I wouldn't worry about it. Atleast he is training...my DD has no interest!

I think it would be better to use the Pull Ups rather than have him feel bad for messing his underwear. I always take the extra clothes in a ziploc bag so when there are accidents I can contain the smelly clothes in the bag. Good luck!

Last yr we put my DD back into pull-ups for the whole trip. I did not want to wait until we made it to the front of a line for her to need to potty! I also didn't want her to have accidents in the park - especially on the rides! She did fine wearing pull-ups for the 9 days, but did have some accidents in them! Thanks goodness we had them! When we got home, she transitioned fine back to panties. BTW - it took her 6 months to poop in the potty!

Thanks. My son showed a little curiosity in the potty at 18 months, so we got him one. Every once in awhile he would ask to use it. He is the youngest in his class in preschool now and they are all potty training, so I think that has helped spur on his interest. Otherwise, I'm sure he wouldn't be interested at all. He hates to stop playing to try to use the potty!

I think I am going to just go back into the pullups for the trip. He doesn't have a problem transitioning back and forth now. I'm sure our trip in October will be a different story!

At least she goes poop in the potty! He has no interest and could care less when he goes in his pants. He hates wet underwear, so you would think it would bother him. But no, he just waits for us to smell him and then he complains when he has to stop playing so we can change him! :) Toddlers are so funny.

For sure put him in pull ups for the trip. Less stress = better trip!!!!!!

No, you're not a bad mommy for putting him back in pull-ups but be prepared for longer potty training when you get home. When you do get home, ditch the pull ups and encourage him to go every 30 mins-hr and change him if he poops. Or, start a toileting program where you take him to sit on the toilet when you think he like to poop...after meals, certain time of day. Sit with him, read a book, magazine, talk...Good luck..it doesn't last forever!

If you choose to go back to pull ups for the trip, make sure you remember to take him as often as you/he are used to and not get in the "pull up=diaper= ok to use it & skip the potty" mind set. Also be prepared for at least a week of regression at home after the trip. We put my youngest back in pull ups at night for the trip at the beginning of Dec becuase we knew there would be nights we came back and she would be passed out. Her personality is such that if you wake her up you're either going to have a bear on your hands or she won't go back to sleep. So generally, after dinner she got a pull up with her panties over it. I think she only wet it once, maybe twice at night while we were there. When we got home she wet her bed pretty much every other night for about a week. Then things calmed down, the laundry was caught up, the routine was back to normal and she was back to 100% dry. With your son not at 100% on his own yet, the regression may last longer, but DON'T GIVE UP, it's normal when the routine has been thrown off.

LOL Maybe I forgot to mention my DD was 3 yrs and 9 mos before she was fully potty trained! We tried refusing a diaper for pooping, and she would hold it in until constipated. When she couldn't hold it, she would go get her own diaper herself! We finally got her to poop in the potty because "babies aren't allowed on Haunted Mansion!":lmao: Use pull-ups for the trip and don't worry about it. When you go back in Oct, he whould be better trained, but pull-ups are still not a bad idea. Just treat them like unders instead of a diaper, and take him potty often. The reason I say still use them is because most kids at that age still can't 'hold it' for long, and you don't want to set him up to fail if you can't get to the potties quick enough. (My DD always needed to go as soon as we got onto the rides due to exciement.)

I'm in the same boat as you!!! I am potty training my 3 year old son. I use pull ups when we leave the house. I bought him some cute underwear at World of Disney today and told him when we get home he can use them. He is very excited by this.

Mine, too. She wasn't potty trained until she was 3 yrs. 10 months. I tried to train her for 1 yr with no luck. Well, DH took over and trained her in 1 day!
Guess whose going to train DS2? :lmao:

OP- I would just go with the Pull-Ups. It is vacation, after all. Take a little break from the potty training.

i have 3 year old twins girl. for the most part they are potty trained,,they will only really have accidents at home. they were real good at the parks and we did ask them every hour if they had to go. i had them in pull ups however on the plane and one of them does still need one at night occasionally. i would definently give him the pullups. at least he will still feel like abig boy but w/a little help. good luck:thumbsup2
