Potty Training and WDW

Up until only a couple of weeks ago my DD2.5 showed absolutely no readiness or interest in potty training and then one day she asked to pee pee on the potty and she did. Up until then we figured we'd hold off until after our vacation and then go full force.

So, with 2 months to go, do you think we have enough time to get this done? I was going to try the 3 day potty training method which discourages any pull ups. Basically you throw all diapers out and that's it. However, with going on a big vacation, I'm doubting that theory. I kind of want to have the back up of pull ups. I don't mind DD wetting her at home bed because we can get up in the night and change the sheets etc. I don't mind carrying around extra changes of clothes because we will be home to wash them.... on vacation a newly potty trained child sounds a bit overwhelming.

Any thoughts? Options: 1) Potty train without Pull ups, 2) Potty train with Pull ups, 3) Wait until we get back.

Oh, and any advice on using big toilets in public? :crazy2: Do people carry folding seats with them in the parks?

Help! :rotfl:

ETA: She's asked to go potty twice, and has gone with our encouragement (ie placing her on the potty without her asking) about 5 times. #2 is still a big secret for her... she'll stink and still say she hasn't gone.

One of my dd's decided she was done with diapers a few months after she turned 2, right before a vacation, and she did fine. Pullups are the biggest hardship when it comes to potty training - they're diapers! Night training usually comes later, so keep them on until she's dry in the morning.

If she trains, and you don't want accidents, put the pullups OVER the underwear at WDW.

That is something I've never thought of.... by doing this do they still feel wet/are uncomfortable and ask to be changed? I like this idea. We're down to our last 30ish diapers and I'd like to NOT buy another box!

I potty trained my 2 1/2 (not almost 3) year old bio daughter with the throw out the diapers method. We stayed home for four days straight and I put her on the potty every half hour until she started to get it (about a day and a half) and then every 45 minutes until finally I asked her every hour.
I did use pull ups for bedtime and if we had to go somewhere but by the end of the four days she was 90% trained. Now she is 100% trained even at night.

I just started the same method for my foster daughter who is almost 3, however, because bio daughter is in school I have to pick her up and drop her off so she wears pull ups at that time.

So I say do it. Roll up any area rugs and just go for it!

btw DD still wakes up with a HUGE HUGE HUGE wet diaper in the morning.... while the one method I mentioned says to throw out the diapers it also says that a ready sign is waking up dry in the morning... so I'm thinking day time training may work but we're far away from night training.

Oh we used the Gerber training pants with the old fashioned plastic pants over them. When they go a full day without an accident they get the special princess underpants like a big girl!

Thanks! I'm encouraged by this!!

Cut off fluids 2 hours before bedtime and keep bedtime consistent. My girls potty trained no problem at age 2. They wore pullups for another month or 2 at night or for car trips over 1/2hr. I wanted to be 100% sure there would be no accidents. I take small children to the bathroom every 2hrs. They have to go at the most inconvenient times!

I parked the children on the potty in front of the tv and pumped them full of watered down juice. They should have to urinate about 20 minutes after drinking a cup of water. Going a couple of times in the potty really ups their motivation level. They are so proud of themselves. :goodvibes I rewarded them with m&m's.

Dont pass up the opportunity!

This is basically what I did with all three of my kids as well. For a few days they were limited to the family room and kitchen area. We brought out some toys, they got to watch movies and read books with the potty set up there. Since they were sitting on it so much they were bound to pee there a few times, so that was very exciting for them. For the first day or two the girls just wore dresses with nothing underneath and they recognized instantly if they were starting to go not on the potty.

Usually by day two they had the hang of it and we didn't have any issues. Of course with my youngest I got a little more "relaxed". He had just peed, so I told him he could go upstairs with his sisters and I would get him in 20 minutes to try again. Of course, he made it to the top of the stairs and peed all the way down.

All of them were able to leave the house in underwear by a week with no accidents with this method. :thumbsup2

This was one thing that I lucked out with. My kids did not wake up with wet diapers. Right after waking they could soak one, but they really didn't seem to pee in their sleep. Even when first potty training they never wet the bed.

My niece would soak through her diaper and sheets nearly every night from infancy. She wore diapers at night for almost two years after she was potty trained during the day.

Just subbing because there are some great tips here I will need in the very very near future!

thanks everyone! I spoke to DP and we're going to use our Holiday long weekend in August (Civic Holiday here in Ontario!) to focus on toilet training. I've already printed out a chart and bought some little gifts at lunch.

I'm just wondering if I should buy another box of diapers or should I just get pull ups now? If she's not trained yet will Pull ups be a waste of money or do they essentially work the same as diapers?

Just get pull-ups. they aren't as bulky as diapers...and she'll be less likely to revert away from potty training. DS (4.5) does still wear a pull up to bed. some days he wakes up dry, sometimes he wakes up wet. I was a late trainer as far as staying dry/no accidents at night...so I'm not worried about DS right now.

We did the pullups over the underwear for our 3 year old daughter with great success. Now she's permanently trained. Her twin brother caught onto going #2 after getting transfer tattoos at school; now he's turning into Tommy Lee. With the night wetting, we're still having issues with him in the morning where I suspect he's dry when he comes into me at 6am, but I can't convince him to use the potty first thing. So he wets his pullup. Our trip to WDW is October, so I plan to focus on ensuring he visits the potty as soon as he wakes in the morning so he doesn't get too comfortable or lazy and doesn't want to use the potty. At 3.5 he's definitely ready! and lord knows so am I. :scared:

About 10 days before a wdw trip my then 2 yo Dgd asked to go on the potty. My daughter just went with it. I told her she was nuts!! But Dgd did fine. We had no accidents at all while at wdw. We did put pull ups on her for the flight in case we couldn't get up to use the bathroom but even those stayed dry.

Just wanted to mention that you may want to put post it notes on your packing list. The toilets in Disney are automatic flush, they can be loud and scary for a 2 year old. If you place a post it over the sensor the toilet wont flush until you remove it after DD is out of the stall.

Also something to remember is that with everything going on in Disney she is probably not going to want to stop to go so you really are going to have to pay extra attention to when she goes and when you think she should try to go. It's so easy to get busy having fun and forget.

Good luck!

We are potty training my 2.5 year old starting today. We leave for Disney in 6 weeks, when we drove to NY last week from MI he was dry for up to 4-5 hours at a time, so he is more than ready!

But yes, I will be bringing pull ups to Disney!

I recommend taking a folding potty seat with you.....it turns any toilet into just the right size! We had a Lightning McQueen one that I got at Wal-Mart.

I think that you have enough time to get it done. DS has been potty training for about 2 weeks, and I think he's got it down. We only use pull ups at night for security, but he always wakes up dry. I tried to potty train at 18 months, and then again at 24 months, and then again at 30 months.... you get the idea. Once he hit 3 I started drilling it into him that he HAS to use the potty, and then one day at 3 years and 1 month he just decided he's ready, and it's been really easy. I know different things work for different people.

I recommend this, too. My daughter, while completely potty trained, is afraid of the "big potty" and falling in.

Also I think it is a lot of wasted effort to obsess on when a child should use a potty and go through all these commando methods to try to get a kid potty-trained in a weekend. With my kids, they just did it when they were ready-- doing it before then can cause unneeded stress in their life. I never brought up using the potty at all. Eventually they all decide that using the potty sure beats a dirty diaper. The proof is that I have never seen a kid go off to college with a supply of Pampers. Of all the things in life to stress about, this is a little one. :)

And another thing-- I took my eldest daughter to WDW when she was close, but still not fully potty-trained. I found it was easier to have her in diapers. Sure beat getting to the front of the line and having her say, "I gotta go!"

Also, this is a brilliant idea. There is nothing quite so frightening to a child as the loud flush of the Disney toilets. Even my older daughter was petrified of that, and she rode ToT and EE no problem!
