Potty training advice

My DD started showing an interest in using the potty at around 18 months. At 2 she would stay dry all night and went two weeks with out having an accident during the day. After that she absolutely refused to go on the potty she was just a few months before her 3rd birthday before I would say she was totally trained. My boys were actually much easier to train than she was.

I have seen a lot of kids who start really early end up back tracking. It's like they want that control back for awhile.

Older dd (now 11) told us that she will do it when she was ready, period. I took a small part time job when she was 3 and she went into daycare and that day she came home and said she was ready and that was it. Nothings changed BTW

Now younger dd, who had/still has constipation problems, also was hard. She was almost 4! She is also slow to change (slow period!) and stubborn.
Anyway finally one day I just took it away and she cried but it was how I had to handle her.

At 17mons, I wouldn't bat an eye. If you are up for it, sounds like it will come eventually.

cgcw, I don't know if this will help or not, but it worked for our son. Yes, it is absolutely silly, but...we used to drop a few Cheerios in the toilet bowl, and then he would try to "shoot" them. I know, I know, it sounds ridiculous, but it re-kindled his interest just enough to finish the training process.

Maybe I should just keep my good luck to myself, but I'm busting at the seams! DS2 has been dry most of today with just 1 accident that he shyly told me about. I started first thing this AM with the Cheerios as targets and he was more than willing to try this. Later we changed to Cookie Crisps - but I don't care as long as it flushes. Now, he's running to the little potty every once and a while and abandoned the idea of the big potty (said it was too cold on his legs). Also likes the big boy pants with Spiderman one them.
Just wanted to say thanks for the ideas here. Hopefully he'll continue forward from here.

Hey, as long as it is you busting at the seams and not your little man, if you know what I mean ;) , all is well with the world!!!

I'm glad the Cheerios worked!!

Maybe they should start advertising that on the box...

"Lower your cholesterol and potty train your sons with Cheerios!!"

Oh man! Potty training is the pitts! Cindy, I'm glad to hear that you are having some success.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with a late-bloomer in the potty arena. My DD is just about the last one in her peer-group at pre-school to potty train.

She is 3 years 5 months (Aug 99) and just started wearing undies duing the day ... right before our last trip to WDW! Let me tell you, potty training at WDW was fun (not!). She still wets her undies at least once a day. Yesterday, she wet 5, count 'em, 5 pairs of undies. When we ask her "Do you have to go potty?" She says "No" and then wets herself a few minutes later. Thank goodness BMs have been taken care of for the past month! We have read every book known to man, watched every video (including the one with the creepy clown), gave stickers, candy and treats. Nothing, I mean nothing, worked. She is ready when she's ready and that's that.

I now tell her that she can wear the big girl undies when we're out (at nursury school, shopping, etc) as long as they are dry. If she wets her pants and I need to put on a new pair, a diaper (NOT a pull-up) goes on her butt. Pull-ups were not a good idea for my DD since she felt "big" without really being big. We adults know that pull-ups serve the same funtion as diapers, but my DD viewed them as being something really special. There was no "big girl" incentive to using the potty when she had one on since she was already a big girl in her opinion. Now it's undies or diapers. Big girl or baby. No middle ground.

BTW, after her abysmal day yesterday she was totally dry today. *Sigh* Being 3 years old is very special .
