Potty training advice

I have a 19 month old little boy who is in the beginning stages of potty training. He has gone tee-tee in the potty once, but usually he just wants to sit and play on the potty. He has now started telling me that he has just gone potty and wanting his diaper off immediately. He is pitching a fit if I put a diaper on him, and he doesn't really like pull-ups either. I know he is young, and what he is doing now he is the aggressor. He has a 4 year old big brother who he is trying to copy so I know why he is doing this, but my question is, should I let him wear underwear when we are at home? He keeps bringing me his brother's which is way too big for him. Also, do I just let him figure out for himself the timing? I know there isn't much I can do to teach him the timing, especially at his young age. Anyone have any ideas?

I'd let him wear the underwear - that's a great sign! I used to put a timer on the microwave and told DS that when he heard the beep it was time to sit on the potty! I think I started with 20 minutes and worked up the time as I got used to his schedule or after he drank something. I also kept the potty out in the living room or playroom so that he didn't think he was going to "miss" anything if he went to sit on it.

GL!!! My YDS is 18 months and not even close to potty training - oddly him being my last I don't mind a few more months of diapers to keep him my *baby* :lovestruc

Believe me, I haven't encouraged this at all. He just refuses to admit that he is the baby. He thinks he is as big as his brother. I think I am going to let him do the underwear. I know he has to figure out the timing himself, so I have to patient.

he isn't too young my DD was younger and completely trained and my DS was around that age. Yes put him in the underwear at least at home, have a couple pull ups for special cases of being away from a potty for long. It is great in the summer because all he needs at home is the underpants (speeds up getting them down) What you can do is like the PP said keep taking him to the potty every 20 -30 minutes and watching him like a hawk for awhile. if he gets a bit antsy, funny look on his face etc take him to the potty. When he starts to go in his underwear grab him and run to the potty to finish. be really excited when he does go some in the potty! Go with the he's a big boy that he wants to hear. Go to the store and let him pick out his own "big boy" underpants.
He's ready and telling you so.
Yeah more money for Disney when you don't have to buy diapers!

I say let him wear the underwear at home too. I always set the timer and told them when they heard the beep -- it was potty time. My son got very interested in the potty around 15 months old and was nearly completely trained at 18 months but then we moved out of state and he regressed some. My DD was the same way, she was completely trained at 2.

Thanks for the advice. He wore some underwear today for 4 hours before we had an accident, and I knew I should have taken him before he went. I am going to take him to Target with me tomorrow to pick some out for himself. If we could at least get him going good, it would be awesome. Wish us luck!
