Potty breaks while in line

Just curious since I will be alone with my DS this trip.....

What happens if we are in the middle of a long line and DS needs an unexpected potty break? Is it bad form to jump out of line and hope to come back to your spot? Is it ok to ask your line neighbors if you can come back? Or is that bad line etiquette?

I will of course take him for regular breaks, but you know if you have small kids, sometimes it happens.

Yes, if you're traveling alone with your child, I don't think you can expect to come back to your same place in line. I think the best strategy is to always go to the restroom before you get in a long line. Hopefully if you go often, you won't need to get out of line. My youngest went a lot of times between 3 and 5, and I can only think of maybe 1 line we had to leave for a potty break, and 1 time that we were literally getting into the log on Splash Mtn and he had to go. At that moment, it was an "oh well, hold it if you can" and just knew we had dry pants for him if he couldn't make it.

Some lines can be hard to get back to your place. But you should be able to return to your spot in line. On our first trip, my son was four and we were in line for Splash Mt. We got almost to the front of the line and he had to go to the bathroom. We got up to the front, told the CM and he said to walk on through the log to the other side, go to the bathroom and come back the same way we left and he would get us on. We did and he did, too.

I took both nieces by themselves to WDW and we didn't have to leave ride lines. I made a rule that we both go to the bathroom if one of us has to go. That way we didn't spend all day in the bathroom. If I had to go she would have to try and go too. It worked the same way even if I didn't have to go I would still spend a moment on the toilet. Worked well for us.

This is what we do as well. We all go when someone needs to go, and we always make sure it happens before we get in a long line.

Use the bathroom before you get on line. When we went last year with two recently potty trained 3 year olds I think we visited every bathroom but we never left the line because they needed to go. We had the you don't have to go you just have to try rule but they always went

The biggest issue is that after you get out of line, then you need to get back to your spot. Which is not always an easy thing to do. Lines can be very narrow. You would have to try and move past ALL of those people and hope that none of them decide they don't want you to cut past them.

I personally would never try it.

Yes, of course I will do this. But we are going on very busy park days and could be in a few long lines. I'm asking about the just in case scenario.

No, you can't count on getting back in line up to "your space" because you'd have to pass dozens of people who got in the queue after you left who have no idea you left, and the people 'saving' your space would most likely be either on the attraction or so darn near the loading area that you would be too far back to get there in time. Also, don't forget that it would be extremely rude to wiggle past everyone else in line to get to "your space".

Some people may not even let you pass, and they don't have to let you either. Some can get rude and rowdy, confrontational, or simply refuse to move aside.

That's going to be my rule come May while we are there, we all go or wait it out...

Yep, it's too bad, so sad, you have to wait in line again. I'm not saying it doesn't stink, but lots of things stink and there's not much we can do about it. I admit, I've had people claim they were just in the bathroom and shove right by me in line, it's hard not to get annoyed.

The just in case scenario? You start again at the back of the line. I've been to the parks many time with young kids, and we never ever left a line for a potty break and then got back in to what we thought was "our" spot. But then I grew up going to Cedar Point where they do not allow that at all. Try to get back into your spot, and you are tossed.

Even if people don't mind it, the problem is that the queues are not built for people to pass by other people. You would have to shove your body up against everyone waiting in line to try to get past them.

Ive had to.. My now 5yo has had a lot of potty issues and has never had the ability to really "hold it" so when she says she has to go we have to take it right away. Whenever I left I went back to the end of the line or we didn't ride. A couple of times the CMs saw me leave and saw me come back then allowed me to get on the ride sooner. I didn't ask, they offered.

Personally Id take them before but realize you might just end up waiting in line more than once.

I once saw a mother ask CM at that last holding bay area of test track (before the refit) if she could take her son out and hop back in. The answer was sorry no. My son sometimes uses the 'I need a wee' if he wants me to move on from chatting, shopping etc. I now know when he's faking.

I personally would hold a person's place in line because I'm a nice person but I would guess that the majority of people would not be willing to do so. So don't get your hopes up and think that people are going to do that for you. This is what I'm worried about for our upcoming trip since we're in the beginning stages of potty training. I'm think our little one will be back to wearing diapers during our vacation.

When mine was potty training and we went out I got some cloth pull ups. They provide enough protection not to have leaks but the kiddo still could figure out they had an accident. I, of course, changed them immediately so that they stayed dry. It actually helped quite a bit, all of mine has been completely dry outside of the house way before inside.

My daughter is 3 and had gone right before we got in the fast pass line for TSMM. It was our turn to ride and she burst into tears because she had to go. We asked a cast member what to do BC we could not go back the way we came...too narrow. Every CM in the area knew what to do. They sent us across the car, told us the nearest bathroom and had us come back in through the exit.

My husband ran to the bathroom with my daughter while I waited on the exit ramp for them. A few CM asked me if I needed help, I explained, and they were all extremely nice about it

When we got back up the ramp, again every CM knew why we were there and what to do and each one apologize d for us having to wait for a few cars.

Maybe it was just BC we were at the ride so we had obviously already waited, but it was a very easy fix for us.

See....that's very nice! If only everyone was this understanding, the world would be a better place. :thumbsup2
