Potential Delta strike?

My husband read that a labor agreement deadline comes to a head on March 1st for Delta with a threat to strike if an agreement hasn't been made. If this happens, what happens to customers? We have a March 10th flight..direct to MCO (with two small children). What will Delta do if they don't have the person-power to fly their planes?

I believe there is a 30 day "cooling off period" after a strike vote (by federal law). Then the strike can actually start.

I posted a thread on this on Friday on here and the community board. You can do a search.

Here is my theory.

Delta pilots are not stupid. While the union leadership lives in a Fantasy World where airlines are making money, the pilots know that striking will only insure one thing. The pilots know that if they strike they won't have a job to come back too.

The union has tried the same tactic with other airlines (USAir comes to mind) and the pilots have not gone along.

I have tickets on DL in March and May. I am not worried.

Well here is my theory. You're right pilots are not stupid, when your pay is cut 50% and you lose your pension that you worked your whole career for and you see greedy airline execs awarding themselves huge stock rewards when the company emerges from bankruptcy you come to the startling conclusion that these jobs are not worth coming back to.

It depends. If the choice is between a 50% pay-cut, and another job, which you like just as much, with only a 20% pay-cut, then I suppose you're correct. However, many of these folks are in the position of taking a 50% pay-cut, or finding another job which they won't like as much, and will still pay 50% less than what they're making now. Remember, seniority doesn't go with you when you leave.

I don't think that most pilots agree with the NO job theory.... where are they going to go????

I agree the cuts are bad, but I think the pilots will vote to stay. They may then look for a job, but striking is NOT going to get thier pension back since if the airline goes out of business...

Bicker makes a good point. IF they can find another flying job it will be with a one of the budget airlines... No seniority and none of the benefits they are striking not to lose.

Don't forget to tell the Delta execs McDonalds is always looking for a few good store managers. Maybe they won't run them into bankruptcy.

I apologize for almost turning this into a political debate. We arent going to change each other's minds and this is ot the forum to try.

If your traveling on Delta in the next couple months, I would not be worried at all.

You are right. I also apologize. I agree that if you are traveling on Delta in the near future you will be fine. It was not my intention to alarm anyone.

I have tickets on Delta the first week of April. Not worried in the least about a possible strike. What has bothered me are the incessant schedule changes... *SIGH*

I may be dumb for already getting them... but I've got tickets for August. I'm not going to worry about it. Surely nothing will happen.

I sure hope you're right... but that line caused the "famous last words" claxon to go off in my head.

does anyone have an answer for the op. the question bascially is what happens to your tickets if the airline is not running due to a strike or something else.

If the airline is still in business, you can generally file for a refund. You may also be able to convince the airline to endorse your ticket over to another airline, but that's at the airline's discretion.

If the airline is no longer in business, you may or may not be out the fare.

If a strike occurs and an airline is NOT flying, other airlines are not automatically required to honor your ticket on a standby basis. In this case you will hear a lot of "talk" about getting paper tickets.... Ignore it. The "theory" is that if you have a paper ticket you can just hike over to another airline and they will honor it. The truth is that the ONLY way you can do that is if you have a FULL FARE paper ticket. Those $150 roundtrips to Orlando won't count. What you will have to do is go to the airline and get them to endorse it over...

If the strike causes the airline to go bankrupt and shut down then there is a law that requires the airlines to honor your ticket on a standby basis for a nominal fee ($50)
