Hi guys! My husband and I are just back from our first trip to the World and have a couple questions about buying DVC. Of course, when we were there we took the tour and now my husband has Poly pixie dust in his eyes. We spent 7 nights at BCV, 4 at Kidani and 2 at Jambo in a studio.

First, I'd like some advice on the number of points we should consider buying. Of course, our guide suggested 125 but that number seems high to me. We don't have kids yet and realistically it'll be 5 years or so before we do. We also don't plan to travel every year. Every other year is more realistic for us. We probably won't need to rent two studios at the Poly for another 10 years.

Next question is what should our Use Year be? We plan to travel in October and January.

Finally, how long do you more experienced people think it'll take for the Poly to sell out? We won't be ready to buy for probably 6 months. We know the Poly is where we want to be. We know we could buy resale but there doesn't seem to be many people selling their Poly contracts. When we took our tour November 3rd, they said they had over 800 Poly points available (forgot the exact number).

How do you know that PVB is where you want to buy, have you stayed at all of the resorts? Why there?

For the number of points, you really need to look at the point chart for the rooms you want to book. If you want to stay at PVB, then 125 might be best. If you want to stay elsewhere, 75-100 might be a better fit.

In which months will you never travel? The best for October and January would be an October use year, but if you might travel in the summer, that'd be a bad idea.

PVB probably has two or three or four years left before they sell out. I believe they're somewhere around 20%-25% sold so far.

We haven't stayed at all of the resorts but we did walk around the grounds and got a feel for them.

I think the Polys the best fit for us due to location (short monorail stops from MK and Epcot - our favorite parks), we enjoy the tiki vibe, we enjoyed eating (and drinking) at all of the Polys eateries, we don't (and won't for many years) need a room larger than a studio, and lastly out of all of the locations we visited its the one that felt the most comfortable.

Good info - thanks! I was thinking we could get away with fewer points now because we'll be traveling every other year with banked or borrowed points so that 125 will almost always be 250 which is way more than we'd need even for a lake view studio for a week in the Adventure and Choice seasons when we'd typically travel.

Looks like you have thought this out. October would be a good UY. Resales will increase as time goes on, many by direct not understanding what they bought and some will sell as the learn about the resort and the DVC system.

If you're not planning to buy for another 6 months you should go resale for PVB. I'm sure more PBV contracts will start popping up on the resale sites in the next few months. It won't be way cheaper but it'll definitely be less than direct prices.

The direct answer is I doubt you'll save enough to justify resale even if it's available. Oct will be the best UY for that situation, Aug & Sept would be OK as well but for direct I'd insist on Oct. Sell out will be a while, certainly not in 6 months. That amount of points will get you a studio about every year rather than EOY. If you buy the Poly and direct I would buy that many or slightly more but for other reasons. I would buy a fixed week for either the Jan or Oct trip if you go with the Poly. Then take the points from the year before and reserve the time I wanted for the next year and THEN take points on the next years fixed week. You'll have to rent at times if your points needs don't change but I think that's the better choice of those. Truthfully I don't see the Poly studios being that difficult to reserve at 7 months out, esp for the Lake View, so you might consider taking the chance at half the price (and lower dues) for something like AKV or SSR or for BLT at 2/3 the price.

Sounds like you are from the UK. If so, don't you normally visit for 10-14 (or more) nights when you come? Again, if that's the case, 125 points does sound about right. To travel in October or January for that amount of points, you will need about 250 points every other year.

Good luck with your decision-making process. As others have already posted, the Poly is in no danger of selling out anytime soon. You have AT LEAST a year before that happens. Keep an eye on the boards - we usually get some notice of price increases. There will be some of those along the way.

Be aware of two things as you are making this decision with one WDW trip under your belt:

1) while you CAN do other things with your points, DVC does tie you into Disney as your vacation spot at least every other year (possibly every third, although not without some additional issues). People for whom DVC works well have committed to a "Disney Lifestyle" - and WANT to go to Disney over and over and over again. Its a great vacation, but there are lots of other great vacations out there.

2) The cost of DVC (dues and buy in) is only part of the cost you are committing to. You'll need airfare and park tickets and food for each trip.

Make sure to think about what you give up - in terms of other opportunities - to make this commitment to Disney. I loved my Disney trips with my kids, but they are on the verge of leaving the nest, and I missed some travel with them (I'd have liked to take them to the Grand Canyon or Mammoth Cave) because we had half our vacation time tied into Disney - and we only went for half.

I just want to thank you all for your input. You've all helped bring up things I hadnt considered or hadn't looked into enough. DISers really are the best!
