Possible spoilers for Pirates of the Caribbean II....I have a question.

I just saw Pirates II for the 3rd time and there is still something I don't understand. At the end of the movie Norrington gives Davy Jones' heart to the governor guy. How did he get the heart? Jack put the heart in the jar of dirt. When did Norrington get into the jar of dirt and take the heart? I don't get it.

Okay, I know somebody here knows the answer, this isn't a hard question. And I'm already on the second page...

After Jack put the jar of dirt in the row boat (with the heart) and went back to the sword fighting, Norrington noticed the spilled dirt on the bottom of the boat and realized Jack had been messing around with the jar (or at least that was the look on his face). It is assumed at this point, that Norrington investigates the jar of dirt, finds the heart and takes the heart while everyone else is distracted with the fighting.

Here's what I remember: There was a quick scene where Norrington spotted the jar of dirt in the boat (?) and realized that's where the heart must be. They didn't actually show him removing it, but they did show a "lightbulb" moment when it dawned on N. I think it happened when the swordfight was over and they were back in the shallow water by the sea.

Later in the movie Cap Sparrow looks for the heart in the jar and can't find it - he actually tosses out all the dirt and scrabbles around in it trying to ind the heart.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how I remember it.

I'm having an a-ha moment! I feel like such a loser, I saw the movie 3 times and didn't get this! So that is why Norrington was willing to hang back on the island while the rest got away. It all becomes clear...

Okay, here's the next question I thought of while trying to fall asleep last night: why would the governor (or whatever he is) want the heart from Norrington? What good will it do him?

Yep, and everyone thinks Norrington's being so heroic: You all go on, I'll distract them, I'll sacrafice myself. Nope.

Whoever has the heart, rules the seas. That heart's worth a fortune. It is Norrington's ticket back into high society, probably a leadership role in Jamaica.

So the governor guy wants it so the East India Company has control over the sea?

Yes. And he isn't a governor. He's an officer of the brittish east india company. Historically, the East India Company was a monopoly corporation that held exclusive trading rights to - you guessed it - British East India. So they made "billions and billions" of dollars worth of money. They were excempt from some maritime laws at the time and were more or less the most powerful non-governmental organization in the world. And since they probably bought off half the government anwyay, perhaps they were THE most powerful organization in the world. They were the Wal-Mart of the 1600's to 1800's, if you'd like, compared to all others being little mom and pop traders. So to many people, they could be viewed as "evil", which is certainly how they are portrayed in the POTC movie(s).

They were bad news to pirates as well because they were also a quasi-military organization that had armies and carried cannon on their merchant ships. Most merchant ships in that time were unarmed, and thus easy prey for a fast moving pirate ship who would usually just scare them into submission without a fight. The East India Company ships would fight, however, though they were rarely a match for a well handled, larger pirate ship. But they were powerful enough to keep smaller pirate ships at bay, and since most pirates were in small ships, it helped keep the companies ships out of pirate hands.

What a great explanation!

My 5 year old really surprised me the other day when he came up with something about the movie (yes, I am a bad mom and let him see it)....he said "Davy Jones IS the sea, and whoever got the heart got the sea." I was pretty impressed, as that pretty much sums it up. I think I need to start pushing him towards a degree in literature. :rotfl:
