Saw POTC tonight. A client of DH's that works for McDonalds was kind enough to give us passes to see an early screening of the movie (Wednesday night).

OK, now keep in mind DH and I had VERY high expectations for the movie and...

Well, if you don't wanna know just stop here.

We were not impressed. I'm very sorry to say that, too. There were no previews for this screening and it still came in over two hours. They could have cut out alot of it. I was yawning and looking at my watch toward the end. Way too much action. Really. And the whole Davy Jones and Kracken thing paled in comparison to the curse from the first movie. (It was still fresh in our minds cause we watched it at home last night on DVD.)

The Kracken special effects were just plain awful, if not embarrassing to watch. Wait to you see the scene with the Kracken and Jack. Ouch. And by the third time I was sick of seeing the Kracken to be honest. Note that after the Kracken is attacking for the third time how the only crew left onboard is all the original crew. Funny how all the other crew they picked up along the way died. Couldn't they have stuck at least one of the new crew up there with them? (DH caught that, too...)

The sea people or whatever you want to call them looked stupid - I mean, the cursed pirates in the first movie were just sooo much cooler. Definitely better special effects on that.

Johnny Depp was funny as Captain Jack Sparrow and was yummy. (Sorry guys - had to throw that in!) Orlando looked pretty yummy, too. But, DH thought Depp's performance wasn't quite up to his in the first movie.

I'd advise watching the first movie before going to catch the references in this one if you can. The poor doggie...

It ends with a surprise! (I won't give that away!) and a total cliff hanger - it almost forces you to see the third movie when it comes out.

One cool thing was the new Disney credit opening at the start of the movie. It was Cinderella's castle at WDW and looked so awesome you just want to go there and NOW!

Sooo, in conclusion - it is OK, doesn't compare to the first and now I'm a little sad about the additions they made in the ride. I guess I'll have to wait and see, but DH agreed with me - he isn't quite as excited about seeing the new Davy Jones effect.

Bummer.

I only go to see Captain Jack anyhow. ;)

Seriously, thanks for the review. I'll still go see it and draw my own conclusions but it's interesting to see what others think about it.

I hate to hear this. We will still go no matter what, but I was sure wanting to see another great Pirate movie. :sad2:

I gave this movie some more thought last night. I was really hard on it, but I was really pumped when we went in and it just kinda felt like a big let down.

It is like this - the first movie had this cool and clever storyline and had just the right about of action to support the story. This second movie seemed to be less on story and just alot more action. Given that it ends in a cliff hanger I'm almost wondering if they could have combined the two and cut out those long action scenes. Might have made for a better story.

Don't get me wrong - it was decent, just not what I had built up in my mind and that scene with the Kracken and Jack was just plain bad.

This is the first bad review I've heard so far. But since you said it was too action packed, I am guessing it will be more my cup of tea. I really love the action parts of it, and a movie that comes in at over 2 hours is a blessing for me.

I'm the type of person who went and saw Mr & Mrs Smith and was disappointed at the *lack* of action. I really don't care for involved story lines when it is supposed to be an action movie. Domino was one of those movies for me as well... to much story with the action

So you named a few things I was hoping to hear ;)

I'm seeing it tonight at midnight... can't wait still!

My thoughts exactly!!!!!!!! I can't wait to see more of Captain Jack Sparrow!!!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It looked like it was going to be heavy .... and that's just from the previews....most preview clips were action packed, so I'm not surprised by your comments.

Again - thanks!

Do you really need a plot when you have Capt. Jack?

We can't wait to see it, but I'll go with realistic expectations. Very few second movies live up to the firsts.

I don't mean to hijack your thread - but I'd like to get an opinion from someone who has already seen the movie. Do you think this movie would be okay for an 11 year old girl? We all loved the first movie and have been anxiously waiting for the sequel. My DD-11 is inviting two friends to the movie and dinner for her birthday. The mother of one of the girls said she won't let her DD see PG-13 movies, but she reluctantly agreed to let her child come with us. Now I'm just getting paranoid because I don't want these people to hate us because we're taking their DD to an inappropriate movie. Please put my mind at ease!

Thanks!

If Captain Jack has plenty of screen time, I'll be happy.

There is no way my 8 year old DD could handle it, but my 5 year old DD probably could. Go figure! I think 11 year olds could handle it, just depends on the kid. I'm guessing the PG-13 rating is based on the fight scenes??? There was really no sex or bad language. A little scary looking perhaps in some parts...

Thanks Shan! That's what I hoped to hear! I'm guessing the fight scenes aren't too graphic. At least they weren't in the first movie.
