Potato Heads here we come! A May 2012 BC WDW/USO PTR! Updated 5/13

Packing, or the steps that lead to the actual function of placing items in luggage for travel, is a process for me. I think I mentioned prior that I start about two weeks beforehand....well, that's a lie.

I start the moment I know I'm going on a trip. I just keep it to myself. Why?

Because my family (mama, gigi, DH, etc) are constantly finding reasons to laugh at me, which I generally deserve and find comical myself, but mostly because I try to keep my crazy down to a minimum.

I'd bet my favorite pair of post partum body shaping undies (you know the pair that doesn't feel restrictive - all you mommies got 'em) that breaking out the suitcase 5 weeks prior to travel would be pushing it...and possibly securing an appointment at our local psych-in-the-box.

So when a trip is confirmed, I start to think instead; not daring to put any plans in written format lest they be found and I be taken away. I play this little mind game where I start to tick off in my head all the little errands and "needs" we might have for two weeks of travel. Right about now in my time frame is where the lists come out and there are multiple pieces of paper in my purse, jacket pocket, on the back of the toilet. Occasionally, even DH will pick one up (generally the toilet one) and make remarks....once I even saw his terrible chicken scratch in blue ink (not the black fine point I prefer) on one of the lists left in the garage by the dog food bin.

I also keep one list on my iPhone which is my master shopper...it has all our "needs" and what I use to refer to when checking out my coupon/deal sites...which is what I am starting to do this week.

Notice I say "needs". Yes, this is one of those supposed mind tricks, but ineffective because I know with certainty that I don't "need" any of this crap to go on a trip. I could make do just fine without a doubt, but for some reason, my female brain is wired in a way that I must be prepared for all eventualities on a trip....and this trip is no different except in the respect that it is highly exaggerated by one simple fact: the Swagger Wagon.

male-female-brain2.jpg

You see, with us driving and taking a VAN, sky is the limit! You know how much CRAPPOLA I can fit in a ride like that?

overpackedcar-241x300.jpg

Freak snow drift in June? No problem...I've got our coveralls.

Stuck in a mud pit because you KNEW your ride would make it through off-roading regardless of its 2-wheel drive capabilities? Just slide on my Vasque hikers...nary a drop of mud shall touch your skin.

Hankering for a back massage? Ride got a bit bumpy and you strained your latissimus dorsi or gluteus maximus? Well, let me just grab my travel friendly shiatsu chair for you.

Need satellite connection....I'm going to go ahead and stop here before it gets ugly.

As you can see, I can find a lot of stuff for a lot of situations that will most likely NOT occur, but for some reason in the throes of my packing maelstrom, I will convince myself that my family will be as good as stranded on a deserted island...without rum...if I leave the socket wrench kit at home. (Poor Cap'n Jack; I will always sympathize with you in that first movie.)

But not this time.

You read that right....after the last Panhandle packing debacle where one weeks worth of goods completely blocked our entryway, I will not fall prey to this predator...

Can you tell I'm watching game 5 with the Preds right now? Someone just threw a dang catfish on the ice and this awfully ballsy chick in a fit I couldn't wear before my own gluteus maximus traveled seven inches south of the border just swooped in and scooped it up like she was dancing at the Lincoln Center....sorry, tangent done.

Back to the basics....which is exactly my goal here. I am going to do my darndest to stay focused and more importantly...reasonable during this endeavor. Over the next few weeks, our family will make purchases, random and intentional, in preparation for our visit with the Mouse. I'm going to combine these "stories" "journeys" "embarrassments" with my packing plans/debacles because that just makes sense to me.

So please join me for some Persnickety Packing and Splendiferous Shopping...

In Where We Are Teased By the Mothership’s Dignitaries: Day 1

It's no secret that women like to shop.

Okay, that may be a stereotype, but if you haven't figured it out yet; ME = Predictable. Thy middle name be cliche.

A little background....

Nashville had no local Disney store for a long time, like if you searched store locations on Disney's site, closest you got was ATL. This sitch sucked to say the least. Even prior to Opry Mills flooding in the Nashville 2010 flooding, the Disney outlet there had already closed...

opry-mills-wide_1629159i.jpg

Flash forward to 2012...4/19 to be exact and I'm walking into our shiny new Disney Outlet at the re-opened Opry Mills!!! Fist. Pump.

e55cfc39.jpg

Our whole visit to Opry Mills centered around this (and also to Off Broadway to get DH some new boots with a coupon and a gift card I have, but we forgot to even go there in all our post-dis euphoria). We parked on the opposite side of the mall, knowing we would end our trip with lunch at the Aquarium restaurant (sub par meal, but cool ambiance) and a visit with their Guitarfish named Gibson (come on, it's Nashville) who somehow magically survived the flood - actually about fifty percent of the fish did which for some reason made my day so much sunnier.

Most talkative fish ever.

For her sole viewing pleasure

The trek to the outlet had many hurdles to cross and I believe we met each challenge successfully;

de8f2dff.jpg

First the mini Carousel

Then Big Daddy Carousel (I almost vomitted - you can totally see my green)

Eventually, we made it over to the Outlet and DD was all about it Commando-Style...the style with undies...

This shopping trip, aside from getting our fix on, had a purpose: T-SHIRTS.

Yes, I wanted to match at least once, but in theme only and particularly for our MK day. I scored with these:

8459d033.jpg

The kids shirts were only $6/ea - I can’t find that price at Tar-jay for Disney items! So DD got a haul and insisted and trying on at home immediately...

3cb68ede.jpg

I stuck with Jack and DH insisted (he will deny of course) on Capt. America for our IoA day.

7b243045.jpg

While I am utilizing tremendous brain power in deciding whether or not THIS jacket (Park Merch) is worth 14 bucks or if I really need that Disney Nerd clearance purse, DH is corralling DD like a champ and ends up talking to a CM (I had explained to him on our walk over that all employees are referred to as a CM and Disney has a standard - which makes it worth being loyal to the company as a consumer imo - of customer service and being “in character”).

44aa5b0a.jpg

Let me just give you a personality profile of DH....you know the guy everyone LOVES and talks to EVERYBODY, especially the surly rude businessman in front of you in line at the gas station, and gets them to respond at least somewhat? (Now this response could be a lovely “Bite Me”, but it’s there nonetheless)...yeah, that’s DH. I talk to no one. We are a pair made in heaven.

Anywho, he chats up this nice middle-aged CM lady and somehow gets her to assist in watching DD as she barreled through her store and merchandise. DD gently dislodged a Minnie’s Bowtique playhouse from its case and the CM apparently just laughed and helped DD play while her neglectful mother contributed to the economy.

e21581d0.jpg

It takes me about 15 minutes to make a decision on the jacket (I bought it after looking up online its regular price of $50). And catch up to DH, DD and the CM who starts a long drawn out conversation with me regarding the details of our upcoming trip in which she is already aware of all pertinent details - courtesy of chatty cathy DH.

As we are walking out, DH turns and looks at me....

“Did you know people buy stuff at the outlets BEFORE going on their Disney World trips? That’s what that Cast Mate told me.”

I stare.

“Like, we could SAVE MONEY doing that.”

Start to purse my lips and hand him the bag of NEWLY PURCHASED DISCOUNT MERCH FOR OUR TRIP.

“I’m surprised you haven’t thought of that, honey.”

“Yes, you are so smart,” I reply right before I accidentally step on his foot.

Final Haul:
~4 shirts for DD ($6 table)
~2 shirts for DW (2 for $20 special)
~2 shirts for DH (2 for $20 special)
~1 Park Jacket ($14.99 Clearance)

In Where We Are Teased By the Mothership’s Dignitaries: Day 2

Not two days later, I am bored. I am thinking about Disney and feeling like I SHOULD be doing something for the trip. I look over all my lists and a thousand things jump out at me, but nothing is appealing....except one thing.

That dang Nerd purse on clearance that I didn’t buy the other day.

So I call my Mom, ReRe, whom I guess could technically be considered DM as she is a Disney NUT, but can’t keep character names straight to save a starving orphan so her D membership is tenuous at best imho. She’s awake, but in bed at 0800 watching MI: Ghost Protocol. Aside from Tom Cruise’s hair, isn’t married to watching it. I talk a good game about Opry Mills and within 30 minutes, DD and I are zipping down I-40 in the Swagger Wagon to pick her up for the Disney Outlet Take 2.

This time, being a Saturday, I approach visiting the Mills like MK EMH - because that’s the crowds people; a swarm of Nashville’s eager to go broke. My plan:

-Arrive at Opry Mills for opening 1000 (actual 1010)
-Park at Rainforest Cafe (first available area as well as shortest line to the interstate upon exit)
-Rent fire truck stroller for $5 - treat for DD

34b6efd3.jpg

-Let DD ooo and ahhhh over RFC animatronic Hippo

58969bec.jpg

471f8fb9.jpg

DD is the one with the bow giving NO elbow room over. Small but hearty.

-Proceed to Dis Outlet immediately
-ReRe in charge of DD first half while I grab all $6 shirts in XXS (hard size to find) and Mickey Nerd purse
-ReRe diverts from touring plan and shows me overpriced Rapunzel swimsuit to which I respond: “That costs more than all 3 of Matilda’s suits we bought at Target on sale, Mother.” She huffs and puffs and deems me “No Fun.” I feel bad and say...fine, buy whatever you want. I’ll just return two of her other suits and Rapunzel will be her primary. Smiles, Glee, returns to regularly scheduled touring plan.

a03a5b5f.jpg

-I end up picking up some other trip gear - all on clearance of course - for DD’s amusement (car ride briberies)
-We pay for our purchases and as I’m walking out I see the most awesome blue wristlet with a sweet Disney Castle charm on CLEARANCE for like 10 bucks. I am dying over missing it and the line is now about 12 deep - no fast pass option. DD is getting moody and can see the carousel in the distance. I sigh and figure NEXT TIME DEAR WALLET!!! as they say...you can't do it all :cutie:
-Lunch at Japanese hibachi-type counter service
-Big Daddy Carousel....again, but with a horse and ReRe...

7fe5e91a.jpg

it’s like Mary Poppins off to the races all over again

-Forever 21 for cheap silly socks
-This Luggage Outlet I LOVE that carries Dakine gear and THIS:

9fd57d42.jpg

f5c1d7cd.jpg

DD picked this out all on our own and when I had to extract the handle from her iron grasp - do not underestimate the strength of a 2 yo with a fairy backpack - so I could pay for it (she kept trying to walk out sans trip to the cash register - altho a trip to the pokey would’ve been awesome reading for this PTR, I was not keen on their bathroom facilities), she lost her mind....like face-down screaming. I had to use my considerable Mommy spine-o-steel and enact the “Time Out Is Everywhere" rule. :headache:

time-out-t13512.jpg

In addition to the Tink case, I found my park bag!!!!! I was going to use old tired Roxy which has been with me for a few years now, but it was going to be a TIGHT fit....but I hate big bags, so finding the right sized pack has been priority numero uno...and look it even has partridges on it!!!

36e584ed.jpg

What will go in my supah dupah cute bag? (which due to style choices, DH has already informed me he WILL NOT be assisting in carrying - I accused him of being insecure in his masculinity and he just rolled his eyes, obviously not buying my bait)

~Side mesh pockets - 2 water bottles
~3 diapers
~1 travel wipes pack
~extra outfit in Zip Lock for DD
~ponchos
~camera (in a zip lock)
~wallet (in a zip lock)
~phone (in a zip lock)
~laminated portable itinerary
~water flavor packets
~sanitizer wipes
~eyeball juice emergency kit w/ extra contacts (SOMEONE is always having an issue) :rolleyes1
~Snacks: goldfish, PB sammich, fruit snack
~Toddler spoon & fork (DD has an easier time with these), disposable bib & placemat
~Sun Block

Any suggestions for Park must-haves when touring?

Sadly, I also found this and went online to see that these suitcases are more than I’d like to spend...so I am sticking with what I have......for now. Isn’t Mother’s Day coming up????

41xVFPR40oL_SX342_.jpg

However, DH got a treat:

6e712597.jpg

We are suckers for theme mugs.

We left right after the Luggage place, mainly because that screaming fit was about it for ME, DD had recovered splendidly. Headed back to ReRe’s house where I took pics of our haul to send to DH and spent a rainy afternoon ooooing and ahhhhhing over Tom Cruise’s hair with ReRe.

Final Haul including ReRe’s purchases for DD:
~7 shirts for DD ($6 table courtesy of ReRe)

86ac6639.jpg

~Rapunzel Swimsuit (embarassingly overpriced courtesy of ReRe)
~Mickey Nerd Bag ($9.99 clearance)

6b35e20b.jpg

~Minnie Sorceress Hat - adjustable ($9.99 clearance)
~Kanga stuffed character ($2.99 clearance)
~Toy Story Jessie play camera ($5.50)
~”First WDW Trip” Snack holder ($1.99)

1df35924.jpg

~Cinderella Doll that Sings ($14.99 clearance) *this is the HAIL MARY MY CHILD HAS MELTED DOWN car present

30a05829.jpg

~Dakine bakcpack ($34.99)
~1 Tinkerbell mini roller luggage/backpack ($24.99)

jsyk...DD is ReRe’s ONLY grandchild and a girl, therefore RIDICULOUSLY SPOILED...also, she is my Dad & Stepmom’s (SM has NO kids) only grandkid and ….I just can’t even explain the monthly gift boxes. Confession: I save stuff for bday and Xmas because it’s out of hand...this doesn’t even include DH’s family *face-palm*

Soooo Off Topic

Randomly found out DD LOVES straws this weekend...she has been reluctant (stubborn) to drink milk and really is getting away from using sippie cups - apparently too “childish” for the booger. So desperate to not be one of those “It’s All Your Fault Your Kid Has Rickets” mom’s, I grabbed the straw we got in our Cheerio’s box and dontcha know the little...angel...drank two dang cups (SO WANTED TO USE AN EXPLETIVE THERE) but only complied when she got to wear her Belle shirt.

Another great & hilarious update! :thumbsup2

I love the treasures you got at the Disney Outlet! The Captain America shirt was from there, too?

I really wish we had one nearby. The closet Disney store is about 2 1/2 hours from us & the closest outlet is 3 1/2 hours away. But, I'm thinking it may be worth it to go to the outlet one day this summer. Hmmm.....maybe at the end of the summer for some sales!

I should have put this is in the post because I was like WTH when I saw all the Marvel shirts for boys at Disney Store...I realize Disney is producing Avengers, but US is Marvel??? Talk about confusion...I mean do we really have to deal with this sort of double dipping?!

BTW - that shirt was nicer and 15 bucks cheaper than at the Hot Topic (which I refuse to patronage being that I'm no longer 16 and emo confused.)

I would go for what I discovered...very worthwhile, but maybe there are other places close to that outlet to make the day trip more worthwhile ;)

Thanks!

Well, Disney bought Marvel a few years ago. But, US can still have them. Something to do with the contract. Very confusing. I'm just excited to see that Disney is putting Marvel merchandise out there!

:lmao: About Hot Topic! I agree! :rotfl2:

OK...I'm finally IN! (Took me long enough, huh?) Your PTR is TOTALLY AWESOME DUDE!!!

Thanks! Just a few more weeks and I can convert to a TR!!!!

Oh, and to put my two cents worth in. I would totally do Crystal Palace. I have never eaten there for dinner, but the breakfast is GREAT! Little Britches will love hanging out and rubbin' elbows with the gang from the Hundred Acre Wood!

I am very excited for DD on this...I think she will freak over Pooh&co...she won't even THINK about bed without her Eeyore some nights...and heck, if I'm not going to TRY and eat $41.99 bucks worth of shrimp...someone's gonna have to roll me out of that joint.

random comments from the last page or so...

i was laughing so hard at your comment earlier. i had never realisted the correlation between a wife beater and a mid life crisis:rotfl:

honestly, you should be able to turn your room only into a package. I dont think that the regular first person who answers can, they have to pass you off to the important people. if you decide to add that way, just call again if you get a less than helpful CM.

are you still planning on the same park schedule? looking at your ADR's made me wonder if you were no longer planning on Park Hopping.

Is CP really $42 at night? i think its a great place, but goodness that seems high. i'd keep it, but also keep looking for breakfast or even lunch ADR's. CS is going to cost the same no matter what time of day you eat it, might as well save some dough for similar food.

re: kona- are you parking at T&T or the Poly?

i think someone else said this, but call T-Rex to adjust your reservations.

i understand with the dining plan. i too typically math it up. last trip, we were even on the food, basically it was like all the snacks were free with the dining plan. this worked out well, as we used those puppies for about 57000 Icee drinks, not to mention using big snacks in leu of cs at times. i haven't done it for the upcoming trip yet.

Girl! I am totally jealous of your Disney Store loot! I have GOT to get down there!!! Now just to think of an excuse to give DH on why we need to go. :scratchin Because I'm not so sure that he'll buy the "honey, we need this for our next trip (that won't be until 2013)" line. :lmao:

Gotta love a wife beater at the right time ;)

I am going to call again - I had some questions about some possible changes and last I checked, they were saying I couldn't add tickets into a package without negating my discount...I just can't believe it's not possible to get my tix on my room card.

We are getting Park Hoppers so we can go to Epcot whenever we want, being walking distance to WS, for a drink or a meal.

We are doing; Sun: USO, Mon: USO then BC SAB, Tues: DHS, Wed: MK, Thurs: Epcot, Fri: AK, Sat: pool and check out....

I guess technically we could do without PH, but we really want the flexibility they afford.

Oh my word...YES. $42 bucks for some pictures and shrimp (still in the shell, mind you!) - I may just look into it for lunch. That's an awesome suggestion! Thanks.

re: kona- are you parking at T&T or the Poly?

We were planning the Poly, but I didn't even think of the T&T and just monorail it to Poly then MK....that may be the better idea.

I plan on calling TRex....is it different calling them direct rather than going through WDW for reservations?

I think the DDP's issue (because I have true admiration for the plan) for me is the commitment factor and we order wierdly sometimes...I have this thing for appetizers as my meal ;)

I think if DD was older, it would be more useful for our family.

It's not so far for you to HAVE to spend the night, BUT if you combined it with something downtown, Sounds Game, or a Grand Ole' Opry show....you could shop at Opry Mills....MICHAEL KORS, FOREVER 21 BIGGER THAN WALMART, JCREW OUTLET, COACH OUTLET!!! in addition to Disney....stay the night or two at Opryland...so fun. They even have packages now. Make a family weekend of it and if you happen to come home with 1 or 6 Disney bags....so be it ;)

True...very true. And the Opryland Hotel DOES have those cute little Shrek packages available now. Or so the ad at the top of the page tells me they do anyway.

Wait...did you say Coach Outlet? Oh dear. I think I just heard my wallet cry. :cloud9:

Love the updates!! I am so excited to go check out Opry Mllls since they reopened. We are going to Thomas the Train over Labor Day Weekend in Nashville...perfect time to eat at Rainforest Cafe and do some Pre-2013 trip shopping!!

And I am still :rotfl2: about Hot Topic!!

I agree, there is something aout Disney merch I just love...moreso than other companies, but it could just be their Mind Control.

I hate/love that DD is not at that stage yet....I cannot IMAGINE the damage that will be done when she starts getting into stuff like Coach. The outlet is actually fairly nice...had some decent deals. Now, I didn't check, but the Coach outlets I've been to everywhere else frequently do a 20% off daily sale on the weekend...or some version. I am hoping this one will be similar ;)

The Shrek packages are cute...we went to the hotel over Xmas when some friends were in town and we caught glimpses of the characters - DD fell IN LOVE. It's just extroardinarily beautiful at Opryland imo.

Thanks! You simply must check out the mall then...they'll have end of summer deals! Skip Aquarium restaurant though...terrible food and wait! I'm going to have to look up Thomas...I forgot all about that and I bet DD would love it.

I really need to make a trip over to Opry Mills soon! It's been years since I've been there... even way before the flood.

My problem is that DD is only 6, but she already has an abnormal love for anything girly. She tries to pack off my Vera Bradley's on a daily basis, and she tried to pack off my Coach purse the other day. Anytime we go shopping for a new outfit, we have to buy her shoes, a hairbow and a purse to match. Then she wants pjs for later that are in the same color scheme. And, of course, she can never venture off to kindergarten without her lipgloss. I think I've created a monster. *slaps forehead*

i was just reading about this on another PTR- wish i could remember which one- or actually, it may have been a different section here on the dis. but the conscensous (sp?) was that you could keep the discount but had to have a higher up change the reservation for you.

I'm not sure when it opens, we've haven't driven there since i was about 10. but it might save you the worry about going over the time limit at the Poly.

no, its a seperate number. i can't get to the link right now but i know that its in amandaw adr changers thread

it works well for us because it saves DH the sticker shock at meal time. however, if we were going to lose money i'd drop it too.

thomas you say?

I really need to make a trip over to Opry Mills soon! It's been years since I've been there... even way before the flood.

The last time i was at Opry Mills it was still Opryland:lmao: I miss Opryland!

Oh NO---my suitcase(s) have been sitting in my room next to the closet for a couple weeks now :rolleyes1. When I buy things I know I'll need I just toss them on top. Getting to the point where I'm looking at packing lists (boo! I forgot to move over my original ones from my old computer :( ) to see what they suggest that I just *need*. Funny enough the last time I went to WDW, 2 years ago, I decided to join my parents that day at work and packed in an hour before heading off. (Boy was that difficult for me! My family figured I should have that list down pat in my head and were amazed that *I* did it! And crazy--I didn't have to buy anything new for the trip beforehand either ;) )
I went on disney shopping online and bought new t-shirts, since I needed new ones anyway. Some of the shirts were actually theme park exclusives, but of course I've already seen more I'd like to get :scared1: Bought new Tevas two weeks ago, along with other little items. Now today I'll need to go pick up some more sd cards for the cameras and batteries.

There is a nice VB store right across from Coach:wizard:

I really need to make a trip over to Opry Mills soon! It's been years since I've been there... even way before the flood.

You should - has some fabulous new stores and the food court is nicer I think.

I have NO idea how you got away with packing in an HOUR...that's miraculous. What sort of Teva's do you go with? I plan on a post dedicated to my faves ;) I've worn to Disneyland...I LOVE THOSE SHOES.

To be honest, I really don't know how I did the packing either.:confused3 It was a blur, all I know was I was hyped up on the leaving for Disney:cool1: And I only have to pack for myself. . .so it was just a quick running through of what I usually did in a day and throwing it in bags as I went. Luckily it was a Wednesday--which is my Monday for work, so I had all my laundry caught up, or Ida been in troubles :rotfl:
I love the Teva Mush, and would have known nothing about them if it had not been for the DIS. I am NOT a thong sandal wearing girl. . .have always hated that piece that goes between your toes, it hurt!!! So I tried them on when shoe shopping for one WDW trip and found them to be :cloud9: And as long as I'm not running across an airport in them (calves about exploded that time :upsidedow) they are uber comfortable. Right now I'm still pondering if I should take my baggalini or find a new one, but not a back pack. Running out of time, and pretending I'm not :rolleyes1
Can't wait to read more from you :goodvibes

Hoping I didn't miss something here---There were so many updates!

You should be able to turn your room only discount into a package AND keep your room discount. I've done this before. After all, Disney would rather give you your room discount and have you buy your tickets from them, than only get your room money and somebody else getting your ticket money.
