Post your Give a Day Project Linus Blankets!

How much fabric did everyone buy for their blankets? I'm heading out this evening and am not sure how much to buy. If the size of the blanket is suppose to be 50" x 70" does that include the fringe? or is that the size not counting the fringe? :confused3 Did my question make sense?

You all convinced me to sign up for this opportunity! I've done the fleece ones in the past for Christmas presents - they are fun - I know my family will really get into it!

One more question: Do I need a special kind of scissors for these, or did any of you use regular old scissors?
TIA.

I didn't get any pictures of ours before I turned them in yesterday! Our family of 4 made 2 blankets each. Ours were single layer fleece 1 1/2 yards with the salvage edge trimmed and I cut 3 inch fringe on two sides. I didn't knot them as they requested they not be knotted since the knots are uncomfortable for babies and I didn't know if a baby or a teen would get my blankets! I was super nervous with the directions though as our project linus GAD person was pretty unhelpful pretty much her post said WE ARE NOT TEACHING YOU HOW TO MAKE BLANKETS. I did find this website which I found to be a really big help as I needed pictures to help me understand!

I actually used my nursing bandage scissors and my mom used normal scissors to help! I think it would be cute with special zig zag scissors but not necessary!

I should have shopped around for a different project! Even using the cheapest fleece I could find I spent $90 on fleece...we had to make 72" blankets, double fleeced, so they were $12-17 each. We have 4/6 done, and my hands are sore from cutting! LOL

I can't believe each chapter required different rules. My chapter was only 1 single fleece blanket per person 36x 45 or 45x60. I'm glad because we are mailing our out. We bought the fleece today and it came out to $25 for all three. We are making 1= 36x45 and 2= 45x60.

I thought all three fleece were 50% off but only two were. the 3rd one was only 30% but the girl had already cut it.We discussed donating 3 fleece blanket per year at x-mas time.

We bought out fleece fabric today for Project Linus. My question for those who have complete their projects.

Do I wash the fabrics before/after cutting ?
Do i not wash it at all . Just make it and send it?
TIA!

Our local chapter said NO WASHING.... I would definately double check..

My Mom needed help running her flea market booth today, so I made one of these while I was there! As soon as I complete my second I will post the pics.

You guys are so lucky that you got good deals on fabric. Any online store recommendations? I got 30% off at Hobby Lobby, but it still cost us about 20$ per blanket - which seems really steep. Maybe we should have volunteered a day somewhere instead!

I let my kids choose the fabrics-so I won't even comment on the cost :-). Not to mention DD isn't even old enough to participate but she wanted to make "her" blanket too.

Honestly-we did this project in the spirit of giving. We hope to use the vouchers but if not we will give back to central FL. My kids LOVE Disney and they understand it's a win win to participate in the GAD program.

This is so cool - I would totally love to do this! I have NO clue where to start. I'm in Baton Rouge, how do I find out if I can do this for the GAD promotion. IF not locally, can I do it some other way............. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it so much!!!

Thanks!!

I dropped our blankets off on Saturday and WOW! did that lady have a lot of blankets in her house! Her main floor was FULL and she said she'd already shipped out 1600:scared1:

I was looking around while she pulled my paperwork and checked me off and some of the cuts / knots were so very perfect! I can't imagine kids and husbands helped with those. Mine were decent, but done with scissors (I guess many people used rotary cutters) and by no means perfect. I felt a bit inadequate!

The coordinator told me this was her last day of collection and that ours would most likely be sent to Haiti. I think they have more than they can handle locally.

As for cost, I think it was around $30 for the required 1 per person, single layer, 1.5 yds fabric ea. I got very lucky and found very cute fabric in the "remnant" section at JoAnns for about $7.50 ea. I think one may have measured 1.46 yds. and another 1.55, etc. but close enough.

We may not even use our tickets. We'll donate them if we decide not to go this year. We're leaning towards going back for Spring Break 2011. Although, I've been wanting to visit Disneyland, too, just to see something a little different.....hmmm...

I signed up our family to make six blankets. The only requirement is that they be 2 yds. I have never made a single layer fleece blanket, do they turn out nice? It seems a lot easier than the double layer ones I made several years ago when they were all the rage. I don't want to deliver anything cheesy, though. I signed up my four kids but I will be the one that makes the blankets, since I want them to look nice. I can't imagine a 6 yr old actually cutting out the fringe and knotting the blankets.

For my kids I did the cutting but they did great with the knots! I had all the cutting done so we could knot during Sat night movie night. It worked well, the blankets look nice, and my kids have a real sense of accomplishment!

My thought was to use up the basket of misc. thread we have but its taking FOREVER. We only have 2 done so far out of 6:scared1:

We got our vouchers in our inbox today!!! Yay!!! Printing them right now. Our trip isn't until October, but I don't want to take any chances. ;) Also its a good idea to save the pdf file to your hard drive, just in case.

We are in Pensacola and I signed up for one in Georgia. PM me with your email address and I will fwd you the information.

I'm still working on the last couple but here are pix of the finished ones. We used clearance and cheap Wal-Mart fleece, they were $2.87 and $4.44 per yard. We still spent $90 as we had to do 2 yard double-sided blankets. Shipping is going to be a fortune!
