post-surgery Atkins questions

I just had surgery (for colon cancer - caught it just in time, and I am home after 6 days). I only had 2 days of a "light solid" diet in the hospital before coming home yesterday - and each meal was a carb feast! LOL (or I would if it didn't hurt so much) Of course, I ate what they gave me, and am supposed to stay on "light solids" for about another week, gradually adding more solid food.

My BIG question is, how do I transition back to a full Atkins, and how soon? My doctor is also on Atkins (but I am not sure how seriously since he ate cake and ice cream this week! :) ), and he said to lay off the salads for a couple of weeks so the colon doen't get overwhelmed/irritated.

I have lost 60 pounds, and want to lose about 60 more, so should I go back on induction in a couple of weeks? Does anyone have experience in resuming Atkins after abdominal surgery? All suggestions will be gratefully considered!

(BTW - I must be feeling better if I am here discussing these things with you! Also, I am not weighing myself for at least a week - I hope!))

I don't have an answer for you, but I'm sure that someone here might be able to help you. I think that your physician could probably give you the best advice.

You take care of yourself.

God bless, best wishes, and encouragement, RaySharpton:)

Wow, congratulations on your weight loss and your successful surgery. Thank God it was caught in time! :)

I'm not on Atkins so I can't answer your question. Just wanted to say PHEW! I'm so glad you are alive and healthy, what a wonderful thing! :) xo TigH. xo

How wonderful that the cancer was caught early!! I know how you feel (fallopian tube cancer, July 2002, 3 rounds of chemo and still cancer free, yahoo!). And you have lost 60 lbs!!! Wow!

The transition back to Atkins should be fairly easy. You want to keep your colon calm until it is fully healed, so you would need to eat well-cooked vegetables and fairly soft foods. Atkins shakes might work really well for a meal or two every day until the healing time is up.

Good Luck, and Congratulations, you have so many reasons to celebrate!!!

personally, and this is certainly just my opinion, I don't think I would worry about atkins a whole heck of a lot untill I was sure my Colon was fully healed. I also agree that you should talk to your doctor and ask some really specific questions.
We all LOVE to lose weight but getting healthy is also a big priority :)

Thanks for all the good thoughts and suggestions. I am feeling better every day, I AM following doctor's order's to the tee, and I look forward to re-starting Atkins in a couple of weeks, without being over-indulgent now.

(PS - I am really glad I had lost the weight before surgery because I am sure that it made the surgery/recovery so much easier!)

Thanks!
