I've heard of lots of people trading IN to DVC through RCI, but I haven't seen many posts here about people being successful trading OUT of DVC to other places. Maybe this poll will shed a little light on our success rate.

FYI: This poll if for exchanges OUT of DVC. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

FYI 2: This is a multiple answer poll, so check all that apply.

We went to Cancun and had a great time.
No problems

I am one of those who TRIED to trade into DVC through RCI, but was informed that if you own RCI within 30 miles of Disney, you are not allowed to trade. I own at Orange Lake, which is a great resort, but I like to stay on property, as well. It would be nice to be able to trade.

That wasn't my question. I'm looking for people trading OUT of DVC. We have never been able to trade nearby resorts INTO DVC. That was explained to us before we even purchased. I'm just wondering if there really is anyone who has successfully traded OUT.

It appears csjordan's post was edited. The section you quoted was only a lead in to a proposal for direct trades. While the proposal was a cleaver idea (even reasonable!) -- it walked a fine line concerning the use of RCI exchanges. I'm sorry to see that the post was edited w/out explanation.

No one explained that to me before I purchased, although DVC's weren't on my mind back then. This is a recent venture between RCI and DVC.

If I didn't answer your question, you could have just let it go... no need to be curt.

I was only kidding about the trade...although after the moderator emailed me, I discovered that I could actually post that in the trade/exchange section. The moderator could have maybe just moved it instead of editing it. Oh well, after consideration, I did post it there...figured why not! :confused3

Sorry if you thought I was being curt. It wasn't my intent, but I really DO want to know if DVC members have had much success trading out with RCI. We already KNOW lots of folks have traded in, because we see evidence of that here all the time.

No problem! Good luck finding your information! :)

Unfortunately Diane, those of us most likely to be successful are also least likely to use the option because we'd have better and much cheaper options to do so. Like your HI exchange a few years ago through II, the vast majority of actual exchanges will be for good places but either for non peak times or to places that are overbuilt like Branson, LV, Gatlinburg, MX, Aruba non peak etc. The only real way to answer this question is to do a trade test with enough people (say 10 min, 20 better) where you put in for truly high demand options (both weeks and resorts) and let them ride. Things like top ski weeks, top HI weeks, top caribbean weeks (Xmas, Easter, President's weeks), HH mid summer etc. Put the searches in 2 years out, then put a cancelation date of say 2-3 months or even 6 months out.

This has been a long standing DVC rule. It is a fairly common rule with II (regional blocks) and was 45 miles with II and now 30 with RCI though I don't think it matters as I don't think there are any resorts more than 30 but less than 45. You could open a separate RCI account or sell your OL week after you added something else. Unfortunately, just adding another week and not using the OL week likely won't be enough as they normally won't let you trade even if you aren't using the Orlando unit but have it in your account. I know the experience has been varied in this area but I know 3 people who have had confirmed exchanges to DVC later canceled for this very reason, 2 from points and 1 from weeks.

Dean, you did see where I was going with this question. I saw the thread on the planning board about RCI exchanges and how likely it was, so I thought I would post a poll about it. Unfortunately, they moved my poll from the planning board where it matched the other thread.

I do see and wish there were a good way to get at the real information. Unfortunately there really isn't with DVC, even with a much larger group like TUG, it's still very difficult though it will likely be better with the changes this past weekend with RCI. Likely a far better indicator would be to follow info on deposits of similar trade power (28-30) or so on RCI and extrapolate.

Overall, I was pleased with my attempt to trade *out* of DVC -- I wanted to go to London for a little less than two weeks. I DID get one week via RCI in London (very nice property; I left a trip report a few days ago on the board.) Rather than continue waiting -- it took a couple of months, perhaps a bit longer before I got confirmation of the first week -- in hopes of getting a second week that I would have to leave early from, I cancelled the rest of the request and paid cash for a second property.

So I responded both yes and no to the poll.

I think it can be done, if you either give them an extraordinarily long lead time or want to go somewhere that has a lot of options. Possibly both might be needed. Asking for a specific and/or short timeframe is going to add to the difficulty -- I told them any week within the months of August, September or October. And I made the request about a year before I wanted to go. But with only one property in London, I considered myself lucky to actually get a week, even giving them that whole 3 months in which to find something.

When we traded through II (When DVC was with II), we started our search for Hawaii 2 years ahead and got a match in the first month. I'm not expecting that with RCI.

Actually for what you got, you should expect success. The Big Island is pretty easy overall and the trade power required is in the ball park using DVC. Actually RCI is likely better off than II for the BI.

Good to know, Dean! I have arranged a private trade with a Marriott owner for the Ko'Olina week, and then I 'm going to try an RCI trade for the BI or Kauai.

Let us know how it goes.
