My aunt has post polio (she is almost 60..I believe) and I use to work for a physiatrist that did work w/post polio patients.

I know two people with post polio syndrome. Both have had some deteriation, but not marked. Both of them have issues that could be associated with just general aging. For example my friend who walks with braces and crutches is having arm strenth issues since she has always relied so strongly on those muscles to compensate for her weakened leg muscles. My family member who had a very slight issue with throat paralysis has noticed more difficulty with swallowing/choking as he ages - similar to the issues he had initially.

my brother has it. he got polio before the vaccine came out. he was one of the lucky ones that the sister kenny method of treatment worked for. he came out it with very little apparant damage.

he is now experiencing some of the normal aging/health issues but to a much greater degree in the areas that were affected by his polio (hips and neck).

for years he sought medical assistance and while he found some wonderful doctors there was so little written about the problem it was very difficult to find effectived treatment (after all, as a society we are truly just begining to see the first large wave of polio survivors experience senior related medical issues).

he ultimatly found a doctor that specializes in post polio syndrome and works co-operativly with his doctor and orthopedist. it has made a tremendous difference in his treatment and day to day life.

i believe if you do an online search you may be able to find some support groups that provide excellent information. and, also be aware that if post polio syndrome becomes so severe as to be disabling-the social security administration has come to recognize it as a disabling medical condition for the purposes of social security disability eligibility.

A cousin of mine has it, as well as another local lady I' m aware of. She actually wrote a book about her experience! :)
