August Starting Point
August in Orlando, everyone’s favorite time of year!! There’s just something about a trip that feels like you’ve actually travelled to the surface of the sun…
In all seriousness, there was some back and forth about deciding when to start our year of Disney. If we did it earlier this summer, then we could have had more 2022 trips, including visits with extended family, but the passes would only be good for one 2023 end-of-school year visit. For a few reasons, we decided to wait, start them in August, and reserve our extra summer time for 2023.
- We hope the pandemic will be better controlled and more experiences will have re-opened or fully returned by 2023
- We want the November birthday to be a huge, awesome surprise for the girls. If they’ve already had multiple Disney summer trips, then another visit in November doesn’t have quite the impact. Also, if they knew return visits were possible, they would be all over us to do Disney on their school break that coincides with their birthday. Our chances of surprising them would be essentially 0%.
- Real talk: I’m afraid of the extended family trips. Touring with grandparents who have different priorities, speeds, and willingness to parkstorm is going to be a challenge for me. By next summer, we will have had so much Disney that I’ll be ok slowing down and letting them take the lead. Or, the girls will be familiar with the parks enough that they can be in control of the itinerary. That, or I’ll still be twitchy as heck but I’ve put it off as long as possible by pushing those trips out to 2023.

Once August was decided, we had to wait for the proposed school calendar. Our district typically starts after Labor Day, but they’ve been toying with the idea of the week before for a few years now. The ’20-’21 school year was slated to start before the holiday but then got delayed they needed more time to implement their covid mitigation strategies. The proposed ’22-’23 calendar has us starting 9/6, so we can push our trip super late into August for 2022 and still have a mid-August 2023 trip.
We knew we wanted a long trip, since we expected we’d be having a lot of down-time midday to escape the heat. I reached out to a DVC renter who was advertising points available and she was able to grab a Boardwalk standard view room for 8/25 to 9/4 (10 nights). It’s a little later than we wanted, as we fly Sunday with school starting Tuesday, but the standard view is unavailable the 24th. The standard is $630 cheaper than the next option, so we’ll just have to deal with only 1 day turnaround before the first day of school.
Southwest flights out of Philly stink for this summer. They only have a couple of expensive direct flights on Sundays, compared to what was always several direct flights a day. Rather than deal with a connection and 5-7 hours of combined airport and flight time, we’re driving to BWI. It’s about two more hours of drive time, but then we’re looking at a 2:15 direct flight. Not only are the BWI flights cheaper, the door-to-door travel time is lower and we don’t have to connect and deal with all the hassle that entails, particularly with Southwest’s boarding policies. I am still checking regularly in case they sneak in more direct PHL flights, but I assume that wouldn’t happen until Omicron is well behind us.
Outbound, we booked BWI 11:55AM - MCO 02:10PM. That allows us to wake up at a normal time, head for the airport, and be in Orlando in time for dinner. Return is going to be an early one (8:10am at MCO) but then we’ll have most of the day Sunday and all of Monday to prepare for the new school year.
We haven’t decided what we’re going about ground transportation yet. It’s about $150 plus tip to use one of the ME replacements from the airport. If we booked a rental car, we’d be looking at $330 with taxes and fees, but we wouldn’t have to pay for resort parking with our DVC rental. The flexibility of a rental sounds great, especially since the kids are hoping for lots of water park time, but I don’t know if it’s worth that much more money. Catching the occasional Uber for a quick trip also doesn’t work for our crew, as five folks need two cars PLUS the kids still use booster seats. We’re probably going to end up just transferring this trip and going the rental route for our shorter visits where the fewer days bring the car cost much closer to the transfer cost. We’re definitely torn on this one. The additional expense starts to feel “drop in the bucket” considering how much this trip will be. BUT, we’re looking at a whole year of Disney spending and those drops add up quickly.
My itinerary feels so wishy-washy right now, compared to the days of 6 month dining and 60 day FPs. Here’s what I’ve got so far:
Thursday, August 25, 2022- arrival, activate APs at IG, grocery delivery/shopping trip, dinner on Crescent Lake. I might try for a Beaches and Cream this night, but is that one still impossible to book at 60 days? (Keep in mind, everything is harder for a party of 5, too)
Friday, August 26, 2022- Definitely MK Rope drop because where else would you start a trip? Pool or waterpark afternoon, maybe Epcot or HS evening, depending on if HS is running fireworks yet. Could also target this evening for Fantasmic.
Saturday, August 27, 2022- HS rope drop, see where the day takes us
Sunday, August 28, 2022- AK rope drop, see where the day takes us
Monday, August 29, 2022- Epcot likely has deluxe evening hours. Not sure where we’d start the morning, but thinking we’d do late lunch at Beaches (if we couldn’t get for arrival), then into Epcot for evening touring, fireworks, and extra evening hours.
Tuesday, August 30, 2022- With a late night before, not trying to drag ourselves up too early. Maybe Just resort and pool time in the morning before going to HS for evening touring and nighttime show (assuming they are running Fantasmic and fireworks, we’d need two HS evenings to see both)
Wednesday, August 31, 2022- MK likely has deluxe evening hours. Nor sure where we’d start the morning this day, either. If I bite the bullet and book an MK dessert party, I’d do it as a pre-fireworks package this evening so we could start our deluxe time with bellies full.
Thursday, September 1, 2022- Assuming EP is still opening later than everyone else, that’s our best chance for a RD after the late night. Maybe slot in Space 220 restaurant lunch or lounge reservation. After a few late ones, we’ll want this to be an early-to-bed night to set ourselves up to finish strong.
Friday, September 2, 2022- AK or HS RD, depending on what we haven’t gotten to do
Saturday, September 3, 2022- MK RD, see where the day takes us. Probably make this a long one and go through to fireworks somewhere to end with a bang. The kids can sleep on the plane!
Sunday, September 4, 2022- Early morning checkout and straight to the airport. I plan to make sure the kids only eat whole grains and other stomach-safe foods, as we’re hoping to make this our first return from Orlando without vomit.
There are several factors I’m still unsure on, including:
- Food and Wine dates will likely overlap our trip. They started it late August 2017-2019, then bumped all the way to July for 2020 and 2021. If they move back to a later start (doubtful, as Disney rarely shortens festivals), then we’ll want to watch for opening day crowds.
- MK Halloween party or After Hours. Whether they stick to After Hours or return to parties for 2022 is going to have a huge impact on all of our trips. Obviously, if MK is closing early without fireworks for a few days, we’ll need to account for that in the plan. I don’t think we’d book a Halloween after hours event, but we may do the party if it returns in earnest.
- Genie +: without the loophole allowing you to be rebooking two or three ride times throughout the day, I’m not sure we’ll be using Genie +. With so many days and access to deluxe hours, we can probably do fine without it. Depending on how things go, we may do a targeted ILL here or there, but I don’t see us using Genie +. I haven’t gotten too deep on that with @trippedup, though; he may have other ideas.
- Strategy for dining. Our big 2019 trip, we went with long lunches to have a midday break without having to drag young kids and strollers back to the hotel. We were also on the DDP, so we went crazy on character meals, which our then-five-year-olds loved. This time, with waterpark and hoppers, we may be leaving the parks much earlier to swim or slide, then want a solid dinner ADR before we start evening touring. I could make a whole web of reservations and then cancel what we don’t need, but I hate holding slots that other people are looking for.
What do you think about dining in August? QS lunch by the pool and sit-down dinners? Or, air-conditioned lunches and then lighter dinners? Either way, we’re not thinking about lots of all-you-can-eat or character meals this trip. Instead, we want to target places with good apps or entrees to share. Things like Sci Fi, Plaza Restaurant, Liberty Tree lunch, and Yak and Yeti.
