Has anyone been to Disney less than a year after a bone marrow transplant? I was diagnosed with a high-risk type of leukemia in September of 2010 and had my transplant on January 20, 2011. It's been a rough 7 months for our family! I am so excited we'll be able to take a really special vacation together in a few months. My doctor gave me the okay to plan the trip. He thought it was a great idea, actually. We'll be staying at Bonnet Creek October 21-31.
I have a mild case of skin graft vs. host disease, but really it's not bad. However, getting a sunburn could be life-threatening, so that's something I would like to avoid at Disney. I'm all over the sunscreen, hats and protective clothing. Could a GAC help if I need to wait in a shaded area? I know most of the queues are shaded, but I want to be prepared. I am hoping to have recovered most of my energy and stamina by then. I'm relatively exhausted now, but I don't think that will be as much of an issue in October.
My other issue is the crowds, but I am hoping using a touring plan will help us avoid them as well as we can. I know crowds are obviously unavoidable at Disney. I want to do MNSSHP on one of the nights, it just looks so fun!
I will have PLENTY of hand sanitizer with us and my kids are all pros at using that. And I will likely bring a few masks in case of some kind of germ emergency.
I know I could wait until my immune system would be more optimal, but you never know what's going to happen. Might as well live it up while we can, right?
Anyway, I would love to hear from anyone with a similar experience or any tips. THANKS!
