I am a RR member and have a reservation for myself and 3 others now I need to purchase a ticket for a child (9 years) and link it to my current reservation. Just because the child is linked to my reservation that won't stop from having to pay for their bag fee will it? Is the only way that I will not pay the bag fee is to cancel and re-book the reservation and have all 5 of us listed?

The only way I know is to cancel and rebook. Perhaps if you called they could do more to merge the reservations? (I know phone agents have more ability than us when it comes to changing reservations that have a CP associated, so maybe they can do more in those instances as well?)

If you cancel and rebook, you would have to pay the price difference. We're talking about a $40 bag fee for a lot of extra work, unless the price is lower. For a 9 year old, a carry-on should be sufficient. Or you could pack some of their stuff in your bag. If the phone agent can help, that would be a plus.

True however you might be instead hit with the unaccompanied minor fee booking 1 ticket for the 9 year old.

I think it is best to just call in and speak with someone that way it can be at least linked to the existing reservation and the fee can then be avoided.

I didn't think about that (My kid is 26). Linking is the way to go. Whether it's worth rebooking is another point to consider.

I haven't flown other airlines so I'm not sure if there is a precedent elsewhere for this. Let's say I book a Basic fare. Then let's say at check in so many others have booked Choice and have selected their standard seats to the point where all standard seats are taken, but preferred and extra leg room remain. When I check in and get my seat assignment, will I be forced to pay the upgrade fee because those seats are all that are left? Or does one luck out and get assigned a seat that had it been pre-selected, you would have paid a fee for, but because that's all that is left you get assigned to it at no charge?

I know with JetBlue, it is possible to get assigned any empty seat, including a preferred or extra legroom seat. But those people still board last, are most likely assigned a middle seat & are definitely separated from their traveling companions. But no, there is no charge if you are assigned that upgraded seat.

Also, some SW credit cards allow their holders to select an upgraded seat at 48 hours. Basic seats are assigned after that. The empty preferred seats will be filled by those card holders. So there will be many more standard seats open for those basic fare holders to be assigned into.

It'll be interesting to see how this shakes out over the next couple of years. With the AF on that card going up so high, I wonder how many folks are actually going to keep it. The 48 hours might be much more competitive in the beginning of 2026 and then trail off as folks don't want to pay the renewal.

Maybe. The AF pays for itself if you would book a preferred seat anyway, especially if you have a few people on your reservation or fly more than once a year. I know people who upgraded their card specifically for that benefit.

I am thinking of doing the upgrade for that reason. I currently have the middle card , so I am going up to 149.00 in October already. Does anyone know how quickly Chase would send the information to Southwest air that I now have the highest credit card and can book basic and pick my seat at booking

I made the change in December. It was a month and my Priority cc was not showing on RR…still showed Plus status. I finally called SWA and they tried to blame Chase. I told them Amazon could see my new card so I’m sure SWA can see it. She looked a bit deeper and was able to toggle something and my correct CC showed up on her end and mine.
