I had seen this, but I was wondering if the ticket had to be purchased on the JB credit card or just the luggage fees.

Normally neither. Just holding the CC gets it linked to your FF number and it's then a benefit in your profile. At least, that is is how it works with Delta and American.

I called about baggage credit. The credit will be given by Chase . Similar to how EBC works now when you purchase on Chase Southwest CC.

You'll have to measure the duffle and see if it meets the dimensions. If SW is actually getting serious about carryon sizes, that would be a departure from the legacies but would increase revenue.

Got another 4800 points back this morning for April travel. Bittersweet considering the bag announcements.

My fear right now is that the 3/27 drop is going to come in really high and then I'll spend from 5/28 until our November trip having to do a bunch of math to decide if it's worth changing to get my points back or if I want to keep the bag benefits as they exist on my current booking.

The announcement text clearly says, "booked or changed" so, yes, changing 5/28 or later puts a ticket under the new structure.

How will Southwest credit one standard checked bag for Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers and those traveling on the same reservation as the Cardmember?

All Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers and up to eight additional Passengers traveling on the same reservation are eligible to receive a credit for their first standard checked bag. The cost of the first standard checked bag will be refunded to the original form of payment used to purchase the bag. Customers can use any credit card for payment to qualify for the refund, including but not limited to the Rapid Rewards Credit Card. Customers do not need to call their bank to issue or receive their refund. The refund will be processed by Southwest.

Companion Pass Holders

If a Companion Pass holder qualifies for a checked baggage benefit, will the benefit apply to their designated Companion when traveling together?

Yes. If a Companion Pass holder qualifies for one or two free checked bags (based, for example, on tier status or the fare purchased), the benefit will apply to their Companion. The Companion will need to pay the applicable fee(s) at the airport, and the fee(s) will be refunded to the original form of payment.

Firm agree. Only need one credit card to get 8 bags is much less concerning than some of the chatter that had indicated you'd have to use a card per bag.

Our family of 5 travels with two companions, so also glad that they specified that companions will get whatever the companion pass holder qualifies for. I can stomach keeping one credit card open to get all of those bags.

The wording, and I think it needs clarification too, makes it sound like just because you have multiple CCs you still would only get one "Southwest will credit one checked bag for Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers."; they didn't specify that only one credit will apply regardless of how many CCs you have with them but at the same time they said cardmembers in a general way. That's why I think it could use some clarification.

However, the ability to stack wasn't addressed in the policy change release. Hopefully the release statement about how much the fees are addresses this question.

That's what I was waiting for...added clarification. Sounds like they realized they needed to do some further explanations.

I think your situation is going to be an edge case, but I don't think you will get a free bag for all of you with one credit card. Assuming it's you, spouse and the triplets. If you book three of you on one reservation, the three of you would get a free bag as you're on the same PNR, whomever your companion is would get a free bag for being a companion of a cardholder. But the spouses companion would not as they are neither on your reservation nor is their companion a cardholder.

4 bags is plenty for us, so I'm not worried.

That said, the sentence is: If a Companion Pass holder qualifies for one or two free checked bags (based, for example, on tier status or the fare purchased), the benefit will apply to their Companion.

By traveling on a reservation with a cardmember, the companion pass holder does qualify for one free check bag. As such, they should extend that to the companion. It's up to them to put more restrictive wording in if they want to exclude an extension of an extension (ie traveling with an A lister or cardmember).

The "(based, for example..." section is not an exhaustive list, considering that being a cardmember isn't even on it. So, that can't say that circumstances not listed there don't qualify.

So my husband and I have had a SW credit card for years. Since all of our accounts are communal, I consider it “our” account, but technically it is his account and I have a card in my name. If I fly without him, am I a “card member” eligible for a free bag?
