Anyone have recommendations on what Insurance company to contact? We've never compared our current coverage to what other companies offer. Can you recommend yours? (We live in southeastern PA, if that helps any.)

Find a local indep agent to shop their companies.

Yeah, find a local agent. GEICO and Progressive do not write homeowners (they'll connect with another company for that). Esurance does not write homeowners either, but they are owned by Allstate so they'll probably refer you there.

I would talk to an independent insurance agent that sells lots of brands and ask for recommendations and help in getting the best policy for you.

I have wonderful insurance through Cincinnati, a company you've probably never heard of. Its policies are sold through agents.

I switched in June our car and our umbrella, and we saved over 1500 a year on both! I am very happy!

Just a note. If you switch homeowners insurance, the new company may require an agent to come out and inspect your home. Be sure all repairs are in order.

Had Metropolitan for home, and premium went up $$$$ so shopped around and ended up with Safeco for about $500 less a year. Then got a call from local insurance agent to change car insurance from Progressive to Safeco also, and saved $250 more a year.

We keep checking but can't find anyone that can beat State Farm.

Just a note - Allstate did not have enough insurance on their insurance (however that works) in 2005 when Rita and Katrina hit. They denied most of their claims on weak grounds because they did not have the money to cover all the claims that came in.

Where I come from, we spit after the word Allstate.

State Farm and Farmers, OTOH, paid promptly and efficiently.

I'm in Southwestern PA and we use Erie for everything. Couldn't be happier. Very quick on any claims and have not had any issues with them. We do all insurance (Home, auto and life) through them.

If you have a Costco membership, consider going through them. We use them (Ameriprise) for our auto and home for a great great price. We elected for 3x the state mandated liability coverage for auto, plus we have comprehensive, PIP, etc (everything with a $250 deductible), and with our two cars/two adult drivers it's about $85/mos. To be fair, that's on a 2007 and 2000 car, but even in 2007 when one car was brand new and the other 7 years old, it was about $110/mos. Our old insurance (Geico) was charging us $150 with basic state coverage! For the record, though, we have great driving records, excellent credit, and are over 30. Our home insurance came in about $100/cheaper a year than the insurance we had been using (though that may be due to bundling discount, not sure).

To be fair, the only claim we've ever made was for towing after a breakdown (we have the towing/flat tire/locked out coverage for about $3/mos). It was very simple, and we had no problems. I cannot, however, tell you what they're like if you make a claim, since (knock on wood!) we haven't had to yet.

We have all of our insurance through Nationwide. We have had nothing but good experiences with them. We switched from State Farm to Nationwide 3 years ago. Our homeowner's insurance was a little cheaper with Nationwide, but our auto insurance was drastically reduced with Nationwide.... almost half the price of what we were paying at State Farm for the exact same coverage. It is definitely worth checking out. :cool1:

Thank you all for the suggestions/advice! We currently have State Farm, which we've had since we got married. We're not unhappy with them (although we've haven't had a claim in recent memory for either house or car).

Can you get discounts/"breaks" similar if you threaten to go to another company (like with cable or cellphones), or is that something you shouldn't do?

Just sent you a PM with somebody in PA.

If your rates go up, you can tell them you are leaving. We have Progressive and heard homeowners was going up 10% on average in MA. Ours went up about 50% with NO claims since the house was built 8 years ago. DH called this week and got a few hundred knocked off.

Ditto on Erie. We have all insurance through them & always have, as have our parents & extended family. We're in Eastern PA.

I just switched home and auto from Allstate to Progressive. I have the highest limits on them both. Progressive is saving me atleast half or more on both. I was very surprised. I was with Allstate for 9.5 yrs. :cheer2:

Don't contact Erie Insurance. I had to sue them and won twice but they keep appealing. We have an oral argument at the appellate court level next month. If I win for the third time, the next appeal will be to the state Supreme Court. They are jerks and don't like to pay if they so choose. Obviously, they are wrong or I would not have won 3 times in the court system. Anyone who wants to verify the case numbers and court houses please feel free to contact me for it is public information. I will be glad to give cases numbers and courthouse phone numbers to verify the comical outcomes. This has escalated from $5000 to $80,360 thus far and growing. It's been going on for approximate 7 years and I've spanked them all the way. I have to conclude they are just plain stupid and are not use to a fighter. Thanks and good luck with your choices in insurance!!!
