Possibly moving to NC: Need opinions....

My DH was just offered a wonderful job opportunity in Jacksonville, NC! We are thinking of moving from NY to somewhere between Jacksonville and Wilmington. We loved the coastal area (yes I know about the hurricanes) and loved the friendliness of everyone we met!!

Would love to hear what anyone has to say about the area!!!!

It's a beautiful part of the state, and if you have a great job opportunity I think you would love it. It's going to be hot in the summer but you'll probably be able to sell all your cold weather clothing and just use a sweatshirt in the winter, so it evens out!!

Born and raised in Wilmington, so I am biased, but you will love it here! As you may know, Jacksonville is a military town and somewhat smaller than Wilmington. There are a couple small rural towns in between Wilmington & Jacksonville...Holly Ridge, Sneads Ferry, Surf City and Topsail Beach. If you want to be close to the water, you pay the price, but even if not living on the water, you can be at the beach in minutes. We have a beautiful riverfront, the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic all at your back door! Topsail Island and Surf City are also nice areas, but certainly not as commercialized as Wilmington, but you can be in Wilmington or Jacksonville in 30-45 mins from there. Never been to NY, but from what I hear, this is a whole different world.

I am on coastal NC.


Hurricanes can be scary, they don't happen often We got great notice of them and you prepare.

I relocated here from RI almost 20 years ago. The weather is great! Be prepared for the schools I can't comment on your specific town but generally the schools in NC are not great compared on a national level. The standards are pretty low.

We moved because of a job. My 100 was listed as one of the 100 best towns in America. We visited 3 times and bought a house and I have been here ever since.

If would advise visiting more than once the town you want to move to.

DBIL lives in Wlmington (we are about 4 hours west, near Winston-Salem). He loves it there.

DH and I would love for him to be offered a job in the Jacksonville area. We have a house in Emerald Isle and we LOVE it there. However we live and work about 4 and 1/2 hours away and can't get down as much as we like. We would be very happy with island life on a permanant basis! To the OP...take a look at the town of Swansboro. It is a great little town between Jacksonville and Cape Cateret. Welcome to NC!!
