DH and I and 2 DS's all born here in Central Illinois. DH's company has opening in Atlanta that we are considering. We have always thought about moving from here, hate the weather, lack of ...everything really. DS's are 14 and 16 attend a catholic high school. Any info about catholic high schools around Atlanta would be fantastic. Have no idea where to start, as far as neighborhoods, etc.

Thanks for any info

Maybe you should look at the North v. South thread. Apparently everyone here is going to be mean to you. ;)

Atlanta is a great place to live except for traffic, so you'd want to move close to your job, for sure! There are tons of suburbs so it's hard to give you any direction without knowing what area you'd need to be looking in.

Two of the bigger Catholic schools in the area I can think of are St. Piux X and Marist, but I think they are kind of pricey!

Funny, I did read that thread first, but decided to ignore it.

DH would be working from home so we could think about anywhere.

Move to the North Side.

St Pius X is a good school. A few of my friends graduated from there and all turned out ouk.

I live in atlanta - on the north side of the city. I dont have kids so i wont be much help on recommending schools, but if I can answer anything else for you, I'd be happy to.
I can even put you in touch with an awesome real estate agent if/when you get to that point.

And i'm originally from NY, been in Atlanta 9 years now. Ignore the whole north vs south thing!

Bumping for more info-we are going to drive down for a visit this weekend since it's a long one.

Thanks

I just wanted to give you some encouragement. A few years back, I had the opportunity to move from Central OH to Central FL. It was scary to think about moving away from the state I'd lived in all my life. But I do not regret the move even one little bit. I'm so glad we did it. Thinking about the move was stressful...including looking for a new place long distance and worrying about transferring the kids to their new schools, but I wanted to let you know that it wasn't as bad as I had worried about. My kids LOVE their schools, and I love being far away from piles of snow. So good luck, and I hope it all works out for you!

Don't discount living intown. We moved from the burbs to Midtown a few years ago and love it!!!

I'm a native. You can fire away with your questions. :hippie:

We have lived in the metro Atlanta area for most of the 29 years we've been married. IMO, if money were no object, I'd move north to the Alpharetta/Roswell area. Homes are pricy, but the schools a great. Long as you can stand living in Fulton county(wait til you see your taxes!) Otherwise, you might want to go on up GA 400 toward Cumming or even Dahlonega.

I prefer the NW metro area, north marietta/East Cobb county and on up I-575 toward Woodstock and Canton. Good schools, good hospitals, good parks & community services. Everywhere in the 15 county metro area has TONS of traffic so you have to make peace with that. I would strongly suggest that you buy a house that is fairly close to the school and church you plan to join. You don't want to be in a position of having to commute an hour or two every day because you bought a house in Kennesaw but your kids go to school in Norcross.

And don't worry about how you'll be received here. Almost everybody here is from someplace else. I know veeeeeerry few natives (other than my kids:laughing:)

Thanks!!!

Florida is our 1st choice, but the opening with his company is in Atlanta. Not sure how I feel about that.

We live in the East Cobb area and absolutly love it here. I second the reccomendation about Marist school. However if you are looking to go public we live in a great school district.

Tritt Elementary
Hightower Middle
Pope High

The big catholic church around here is St. Ann's on Roswell Road in Marietta. If you have any questions or would like the name of a great real estate agent I would love to help you out. fell free to Pm me.

There is a growing Catholic school system here in ATL. Holy Spirit, St. Pius and Marist are the Catholic high schools inside of Interstate 285, what we call "the perimeter". St. Pius and Marist are older schools and have excellent reputations. They are relatively large schools. Holy Spirit is newer and smaller. It is a close knit, family oriented school. My son has a couple of friends there, and their families love it. Blessed Trinity is a newer Catholic high school in Roswell, a suburb north of Atlanta. It also has a great reputation and a beautiful campus (it looks like a junior college). I'm sure there are other Catholic high schools outside the Perimeter but I just don't know about them (I live inside the perimeter, aka intown). It is the height of admissions season with applications being due within the next month. If I were you, I'd contact each school ASAP just to let them know you may be interested in applying. I'm sure your current school can help you find schools here.

With respect to the neighborhoods that these schools are in, they are all in good locations. If you chose St. Pius, you could live closer to downtown. Marist is at the top end of 285 and works well for the north side of Atlanta and the close in suburbs like Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, and Norcross. Holy Spirit is in Buckhead/Sandy Springs. You could live in Vinings, Buckhead, Sandy Springs and East Cobb. For Blessed Trinity, you could live in Roswell, Alpharetta, and and the closer in suburbs of Sandy Springs and Dunwoody because you would be going against traffic.

You can PM me and I'll answer any questions. My DSs are 12 and 14. They attend a different private school but compete in sports against the schools listed above. There are also lots of Christian schools here if the Catholic ones don't work out.

Good luck!

I forgot to include the important information that WDW is a 7 hour drive from here, and about an hour or so plane flight. ::MickeyMo::banana:

Thanks so much for all the information guys!!!

I will read through all of it and after visiting this weekend, I'm sure I will have questions for you. Thanks for offering!!

Michele,
Where is the job located? If it is in Atlanta (and not some far out suburb ;)), you might want to look at the websites for the schools I posted and just do a drive by "tour" this weekend. MLK is a long weekend in ATL and Georgia, of course< since King lived here. Schools will be closed but you can still check out where they are and in doing so, you'll take a nice driving tour of Atlanta.
Have fun! Even though we have been in a cold spell and had snow last weekend:scared1:, you'll probably think it's almost tropical when it's in the 50s here this weekend. I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and moved here about 20 years ago. I have actually been to central Illinois. :thumbsup2

Alpharetta seems like a great place to live. DD's boyfriend lived there and she spent many months living there with him and his family. She loved the area (we are from SE Wisconsin) and the people were quite friendly. The community showed AMAZING support for her boyfriend while he was sick & going through chemo. She would have loved to live there, but sadly her boyfriend passed away. I lived in Decatur, GA when I was younger. I am not sure about that area now, but Georgia is beautiful.

Pinecrest Academy is in Cumming and supposed to be a very good school.

I live in Cumming. I used to work in Alpharetta and we looked at houses there, but they are very expensive. Cumming borders Alpharetta on the north. I like Alpharetta, but I also like the Johns Creek and Suwanee areas - both of which are also near Pinecrest.

You should decide if you want to be in the middle of everything or live a little further out. My dh works in Perimeter and I have mentioned numerous times that we should move closer to his job, but he likes the area we are in better.

Another consideration is taxes. Fulton county has the highest taxes. If you are in Decatur or the city of Atlanta, the taxes are a little more. I believe Gwinnett county is the 2nd highest taxes. We used to live in Gwinnett and there are some nice areas there, too. Forsyth county is the lowest taxes. I think Cherokee county is the next lowest.

If you need a realtor, I have worked with 2 since we have been here and I absolutely love the 2nd realtor we used. She and her husband were great! If you want her name, pm me.

Update from our trip down a few weeks ago.

We got in town early enough on Friday to check out Blessed Trinity and St. Pius X. Toured both schools. Blessed Trinity appealed to us the most, we went back Friday night for a basketball game to get a bit more 'feel' of the school. We did drive through Marist campus on Saturday (too $$$ though).

Saturday it rained all day but we did drive around downtown and through some neighborhoods in Roswell. I'm kind of at a loss about what questions to ask.

We are still waiting to hear details of the job, mainly salary, to know whether we can do it.

Thanks again for helping, throw any more useful information you have at me.

I missed the last time this thread went through, glad you had a chance to visit!

I live one exit from St Pius and my son (who goes to Lakeside) has lots of friends there. Nice school.

Awesome that your husband will be working from home, the traffic in Atlanta so sux! I now have a 5 min commute so I don't complain anymore. :worship:

I moved down here 23 years ago from NY. Still not quite acclimated, not quite used to all the NICETIES :lmao: but it's a great place to raise kids. I'm so glad my son was raised here, he's soooo polite!! Unlike his Mama....:rolleyes1
