Possible Relocation to Silver Spring, MD

She lives in Minnesota.

alexandmaddie-keep in mind that many of the better schools in the DC area are private schools. You are going to have a hard time finding public schools that compare to what you have now, unfortunately. Factor that into any salary increases for the job transfer.

That's not true. Montgomery county Maryland has many very good public schools. Howard county Maryland (a neighboring county) has the best schools in the state. Most of DC does not have good public schools, but this isn't true for Maryland (especially the part she's living in). Private schools in DC and Montgomery county tend to be extremely expensive.

Interesting link. The schools in the rest of Maryland must be fantastic to counter the Baltimore school system pulling them down. I think golfgal was thinking of the DC schools, which really are a major disaster. In fact they were considered the worst on your list too.

Yes, Montgomery County schools are considered some of the best in the Country (Howard county is good, but seriously, better than Montgomery? :confused3). Of course, that being said, some are better than others. There is no comparison between BCC and Kennedy (2 Montgomery County HS) for example.

Yeah I read somewhere that Howard was better than Montgomery, but I can't remember where. It may be because there are very, very good and not so good schoools in MoCo, but all pretty good in Howard, so it evens out?

MontCo schools have been falling the past few years. In some rankings they are not only behind Howard, but also Anne Arundel.

I think it's this. Anne Arundel is the same way as MontCo. Some really good schools and some really crappy schools. Howard schools are good all around (and should be as Howard has the highest tax rate in the state!)

I agree. I think Calvert is doing quite well also for the same reason as Howard, they have a high mean income and all the schools are pretty good.

Will he be working in DC or somewhere in Silver Spring, and, if so, where? Like everyone has said, Silver Spring is very big. There are areas that might fit most of your requirements if he does not have to commute very close to DC itself. That's where most of the traffic is.

It looks like it is located by Calverton (if that helps). It's East of Hwy 29 and West of Hwy 95.

Thanks again for all the replies, keep them coming!! :)

I know where that is. Calverton is in an area where Montgomery county, Howard county, and PG county all meet. So you could look into Howard county. Your commute would probably be better going toward Columbia than trying to go toward downtown Silver Spring. I wouldn't look into PG because the schools in Montgomery and Howard are better. You could look at Burtonsville or Fulton. Calverton is also only about 20 minutes from Columbia.

Yes, if you are in that corner of Montgomery county, your best bet would be Howard County. I would highly recommend avoiding Prince Georges. Not a lot of good schools there.

I am not going to argue the Howard/Montgomery issue because I know some awful schools in Montgomery (friends just pulled their child from middle school and put her in a private school because the school was just horrendous) and know very little about Howard generally. I do know that the high Schools in my part of Montgomery are consistently on the 100 best list and their feeder middle and elementary schools are pretty good too.

Yes, DC schools are a disaster but I didn't think anyone was referring to them since the thread is about Silver Spring, MD.

I lived in Silver Spring/Wheaton, and graduated high school from a school that no longer exists there on University Blvd!

I loved/love the area. I am a city girl at heart though and while I enjoy this part of NC I always want to go back home. The traffic is bad, but the metro and bus system take care of that. Commutes are horrific. When my parents decided to move from Wheaton to Woodbridge, VA for cheaper living I couldn't stand not having access to the metro. The drive time from Woodbridge to my job in DC could take HOURS depending on what was happening, and believe me there is always something happening!

I don't know much about the school system anymore, my siblings that live in the area have moved north to Columbia and the Howard County school system.

Home prices...yes....out of this world expensive. One of the reasons I stay right here in NC! I could get a mansion with water views for 1/3 of the prices for a small house there.

All in all, I am with the poster who says its a wonderful place to be if living the city life is for you. The area is wonderful, minutes from everything and anything. I have such GREAT memories of friday nights in Georgetown with my hs buddies, walking the mall for something to do on a Sun afternoon. I am not sure that I would feel this way with a family to take care of in that area. And realistically, I don't as I have chosen to stay here with the kiddos and actually live comfortably!

You are right. I was just giving an excuse because otherwise her post does not make sense. Anyone posting from the other side of the country can be excused if they lump DC, Silver Spring, and Arlington together into some amorphous blob called "DC area" and assume that all the schools are DC-level.

I grew up and worked for a short time in the Howard County school system, and it was excellent. There are, however, some areas that are better than others. Feel free to PM me if you'd like specifics, or you can look at some info here: http://nces.ed.gov/globallocator/
