DS has the telltale cough and runny nose of his yearly ear infection. We leave on Friday AM.

I think I'm going to call the doc tomorrow and make an appt for Thursday in case he's not better. What do you think?

Also, he was sick w/a virus a few weeks back, they drew blood, and found his glucose levels were moderately high. We did a fasting glucose test on Friday, hoping to hear positive results! Pray for us!

Definitely go see your son's doctor. Nothing worse than an ear infection that may cause horrible pain during the trip. I myself had an ear infection for about a month before I decided to head to my doc. Knowing that I would be heading to Disney in a few weeks I knew I needed to get it taken care of.

As for the glucose test...whenever the body is sick, injured, or under stress more glucose is usually released by the body's cells. Personally I think a HgA1c test is much more accurate than a fasting glucose test.

I wouldn't wait until Thursday to see the doc about the possible ear infection, it's much easier to head off than to cure. Sinus infections are slow to respond to antibiotics (sometimes they aren't effective at all). Your doctor can prescribe some nasal spray that may help open up the Eustachian tube that will allow the ears to drain and thus prevent infection. Also if this is a yearly event for your son it may be allergy related and something like Allegra D or another drug may prevent it in the future.

Go tomorrow. Get the antibiotic (or if your Dr. doesn't want to treat yet, ask for prescription "just in case"). Ask for ear pain relief drops too (A/B otic). Ask for recommendation on a decongestant. Take gum (or something to chew on) for takeoff/landing. The last things you want to do while on vacation:
1) Have a screaming kid on the airplane
2) Call your Doctor from Orlando begging them to call in antibiotics (most won't) to a local pharmacy and then having to pay for delivery or a taxi ride to get them even if you're lucky enough to get them called in
3) Have a miserable whiny feverish child.
Take it from me, I know....

Your doctor will most likely write you a prescription "just in case" for an ear infection.

Don't wait til Thursday! DS could be in miserable pain all week.

Hope he's better soon. :grouphug:

Ditto this. The longer you wait to take him in if you indeed do believe it's an ear infection, the worse pain he'll be in when you actually leave Friday. Tell your doc you're worried about travelling (I'm assuming you're flying) with him if this is an ear infection that doesn't present itself for a few more days.

As the person above posted, ask for the anti-biotic "just in case". Sounds like your DS gets an ear infection every year, so you know the signs best. But, do make sure you ask your doctor when you should begin anti-biotics should the infection present itself within the next few days.

Good luck. Let us know what the doc says.

DON'T WAIT!! My DD is on antibiotics for an ear infection right now. It takes a couple of doses for it to start feeling better. Plane rides are hard enough on the ears, much less one with an ear infection (I had one a while back too - they hurt !!)

I would take him tomorrow. We leave for WDW on Saturday morning and our daughter is also not feeling well. She is prone to sinus infections and I can almost guarantee she has one now. Especially since I have one. I made her an appointment on Saturday for tomorrow afternoon.

Good luck. I hope he is feeling better soon. Have a great trip!:goodvibes

Been there, done that!

I would add that in addition to getting the just in case antibiotics, which you must swear to the doc you won't use unless he REALLY does have a bacterial infection, to find the locations of the nearest doc in the boxes to your hotel.

Trust me, I've got both locations memorized-one's just outside of Downtown Disney about a 1/4 mile north of the Crossroads, the other one's over on Osceola parkway near Animal Kingdom by the turnpike.

Been to both of them, and the first time finding them, ugh. Wish I had that info ahead of time. Google them, print them out and pack them.

I also know the way to Celebration Hospital-one of the trips I came down with gastroenteritis sooooooo badly. That was the trip where we swore we'd all wear hand sanitizer in loops around our belts (geek on!) for every future trip.

When we went on our trip in October, I had already been on antibiotics for a week for a combo sinus/ear infection. I thought there wouldn't be any problems on the flight - was I wrong! The last time I felt that much pain in my ear was when my eardrum ruptured in high school. And my ear didn't unclog after the flight - it took another 2 days for the clogginess to go away. The flight back was no problem...

In case this does turn out to be an ear infection, be sure to bring some Tylenol or Advil for the flight and give it to your DS about an hour before the flight...that should help with any pain...

Hope your little guy feels better...

We've got an appt tomorrow PM. Hopefully we'll hear about his glucose by then, too. Here's hoping for the best!

My DD6 gets an ear infection just about every time we go to WDW. Once we had to use one of the walk-in places. Now we bring DD to the dr 2-3 days before we leave for a "just in case" look at her ears. In fact DH took DD to the dr for a follow up visit today and told the dr that we'd be seeing her in about 3 weeks!
