Possible abused dog-what would U do?

If the man is so mean to the dog then just maybe he would let you have it.

Tell your sister to take the dog. If he is abusing the dog, he doesn't deserve it. I've reported my neighbor for animal abuse in the past, and you know what they did to her, NOTHING! The officers came and talked to her, it did no good. You know, these people that abuse things smaller than them, I often wonder if they were in a real fight with a person the same size or bigger, would they fight or back down? Take the dog, change the collar, he probably won't even care.

Animal Control is hindered by laws that dictate what they can and can't do. While they might come talk to your sister's neighbor about their dog, that would be the extent of their involvement for some time. Meanwhile, the poor guy is still living in an abusive situation. Goldens being what they are, they will put up with a lot of neglect, pain, starvation, you name it. But it doesn't mean the dog is happy or living the good life.

What you and your sister decide is between the two of you. Do you live near her? Is there a chance this dog would be seen by her neighbors once you take him? I know what I'd do. Follow your heart. There's a big difference between 'stealing' and 'saving'......

hrh,
you're my hero! When it comes to saving a dog, i guess for me, there are no limits, but that is just me. I've been in a similar situation. my neighbors boxers were jumping their cage and hanging there (yes, they leashed them IN the cage) and when i ran over to release them, they accused me of trespassing. well, they would have died otherwise, so i didn't care if they called the police or not. As for the OP, i have a golden retriever also and they are the smartest dog i've ever seen. If he doesn't want to go back there, there's a reason. I think i'd try to talk to that neighbor that said don't bring the dog back and get a feel for the situation. The neighbors i had been talking about also had a cocker spaniel that i literally saw them kick, i TOOK THE DOG one night, left a note. they came over and i offered them $400 which they immediately took. I had the dog with a cocker rescue within 3 days and she's a little princess now with a loving home. I am convinced she wouldn't be alive today had i not took her that night. they just wanted the money and were glad to get rid of her. according to them, they were planning on breeding her (backyard breeders) just like they did with the boxers. Good Luck!

Thanks for the kind words Donna.. And not to turn this into a mutual admiration society, but I think you're pretty cool, too. I know that a lot of people will say that stealing is stealing, which is absolutely true, but (IMHO) sometimes the end does justify the means.. I'm not encouraging anyone to steal someone's pet, but as another poster stated, stealing and saving are not the same.

Stealing and saving are NOT the same, how true. I think it's MORE against the law to abuse an animal than to steal! These idiot neighbors of mine have no business having animals. I had to call animal control so many times on them. I literally told the neighbor to her face, I will be your worst nightmare as long as you have animals! Well, she moved out and left her husband or boyfriend there and there are NO animals anymore! The final straw was when i saw her kicking the dog and it rolled down the steps, it still was wagging it's tail trying to get back up the steps to the lady. On a final note, the little cocker puppy that i saved, the new owners have a pet shop named Jake and Elwood's and they named the little cocker, Bella Donna (after me!). They added on to their store a place where you can eat WITH your dog with you and they called it Bella's Bistro! A few months back, I drove all the way from pgh area to philly just to see the little pup. They said i'm her adopted mom and I also get pictures from time to time. No one can ever tell me that taking her that night was the wrong thing to do!

I have a golden ret. mix that I picked up as an abused stray (as well as his mommy). He was just a puppy. I wasn't sure, but thought maybe your post sounded like you were worried about the dog itself if you took it in (not getting into the stealing/saving debate). My dog is the biggest scaredy cat because of his abuse. He wouldn't and couldn't hurt a flea! He's very sweet and shy. He does bark at people at the door alot more than a normal golden (we had one of those too, rest her soul), but he is just very nervous/scared around strangers. He will not leave our yard if you bribe him! Unless, he's following me, he'll follow mommy anywhere! ;) His mom is a cocker spaniel (we guessed golden, because that's what he looks like) and she is living a very pampered life with my mommy! :teeth: He's 3 times the size of his mom. Good luck with whatever you do!

How thoughtful of you to share....I have faith that whatever happens with this guy, that he will be very happy in a safe, loving home!

Thanks for the concern!!

:wave2:
