Ok we leave this morning!!! I'm super pumped obviously because we have been planning and counting down for what seemed like forever!y DDH unexpectedly needed surgery exactly 2 weeks ago and will be in a scooter...it wasn't easy but with lots of encouragement he seemed to come around... Last night he had a bit of a moment freak out. Please words of encouragement for a man who is feeling self conscious! He feels like a burden!

He deserves to have as much fun as the rest of the family. Tell him to just give people plenty of space since some people have a blind spot when it comes to an ECV.

Let him know it does not matter what strangers say or the looks they might give. It is none of their business and you will never see them again.

Focus on the family and the magic and have a great time.

WOW!! I hope he has a wonderful time!! But just two weeks post-op? Wow, that is pretty soon. I don't know what kind of surgery he had, but make sure he takes it SLOW and doesn't overdo himself! Tell him he will be in good company as there will be many others there, young & old, on ECVs for a variety of reasons. I hope you have a wonderful trip! And I hope his recovery continues to go well!

Please ask him the following questions. Here are the suggested answers to go with them.

1. Are you disabled (even temporarily)? Yes.

2. Do the people you are traveling with, such as your family, know you are disabled? Yes.

3. Do you expect to meet anyone you know during this trip who may not know you are disabled. Probably No!

4. Do you expect to meet a bunch of people who you will probably never meet again in your life? Probably yes!

5. Is there any reason at all that you should care what these people think about you? Absolutely No!!

6. Will using a wheelchair or ECV make for a better vacation for you and your family? Absolutely YES!

Thanks guys!! I shared all these thoughts on the car ride down! I think he's feeling better an more focused on us ;)

An ECV will give him more independence so he'll feel less of a burden. With a wheel chair you'd have to push him around. If he walked he'd get worn out and feel like he's holding back the rest of the group.
