Portofino or Desert Palms?

I'm trying to get us to DLR this summer. One thing I've learned on our trips is that I can't sleep in the same room as my kids. It nearly ruined our last DLR trip. So I am looking at hotels that have suite setups, and these two look like great options. I do know about Hojo, and we've stayed there and LOVE the grounds, but I had issues with the highway noise/shaking, and the suites there face the highway.

So what can you share about the Portofino or the Desert Palms? Thanks!!

We have stayed at the RI Maingate a few times and love. Penthouse suite is nice, great breakfast, managers specials and free grocery shopping.

My brother and family stayed at Portofino, liked it but thought it was to far. Desert Palms is supposed to be a dump. Have you gone to Trip Advisor?

Trip Advisor reviews are mostly positive about both hotels. Both have noise complaints from some guests, but that seems par for the course in hotels. Desert Palms has a breakfast that gets good reviews, but Portofino doesn't. I could see us picking up food before hitting the parks each day, so that would be nice.

If anyone has stayed at either hotel recently I'd love to hear Dis members' opinions.

We stayed at Desert Palms for one night in 2007. We had only a standard room, so I can't comment on the suite. I wouldn't go so far as to say the place is a dump. It was just blah. We really didn't care for it. The room was dark and had an odd odor. I have a vague recollection of not liking the bed very much. We haven't stayed there since and don't want to do so.

We loved the Kids Suite at Portofino. It was a 10-15 minute walk which wasn't too terrible. There is also an ART stop in front of the hotel in case you want to catch that. Have you also looked into Desert Inn & Suites across the street from DL?
