Does the portion size at restaurants influence where you eat?

This is a discussion we are having at work and I'd like to hear from others besides the few people that work here.

The only instance I can think where I would avoid a restaurant based on portion size would be if it were a very expensive restaurant that served tiny, artfully plated portions for a princely sum. I've been to a few of those, but only on special occasions.

In all other situations, no. I think most restaurants serve astronomically large portions that I usually only eat 1/3 to 1/2 of. I would actually like to see more restaurants serve more realistic and healthy portions for a lower cost (some restaurants already do this and call it a lunch portion-- if that's available, I always order it.)

Yes and no. How about maybe?

Depends on the restaurant really. I know Claim Jumpers gives a ton of food, I know Trix's doesnt. I also know the comparison between the two is the same as comparing food to cuisine. If I got out to eat, I go to Claim Jumpers, if I go out to "dine" I go to Trix.

For us it does....in terms of value. I am frugal, I don't want to pay $$$ for a teeny tiny portion so we might not return to a restaurant if they were pricey and had what we consider to be small portion for the price.

On the other hand, we are not likely to seek out frequent a restaurant just because of a "large" portion size.

It doesn't. I am trying to control my weight daily and although I like larger portions, it is just so that I can keep the leftovers to spread the cost of one restaurant "serving" to cover one or two more meals.

Portion sizes influence where I am going, to some extent. I generally avoid places that serve tiny, delicate, expensive portions - I enjoy good food, to be sure, but there is little point in shelling out a lot of cash for an expensive dinner, and then have to stop off at a fast food joint on the way home because I am starving.

(On the other hand - I run 40-50 miles per week, and have a naturally high metabolism. I eat a lot of food - which reminds me, it's been a couple hours since lunch. Time to hunt down a snack.)

No, not typically, but I expect to have enough to be full/comfortabl and not looking for a back-up meal. We had lunch at a local wing place on Saturday and while the sauces were good the wings were so small, like Tweety Bird small, that 6 was just a nibble, my poor kids were starving. I won't go back there again.

I'm more concerned with quality than quantity. And I also wish they'd make portion sizes smaller and charge less money.

Makes no difference to me. I eat small portions, usually half of a sandwich, half of a burger. My 10 year old DD usually splits an entree with me. I think the portions in most restaurants is ridiculous.

An old joke:

1st lady-"The food here is terrible."
2nd lady-"And the portions are too small."

Take your hand and make a fist.....that's the size of your stomach.

I have a teenage son who is a runner. We just try to keep our fingers out of the way when he eats.:rotfl:

I am another "more concerned with quality than quantity" vote.

Usually not. The only time I can think of is when someone recently suggested Cheesecake Factory and we all thought - no way will we eat all that food for lunch and there's no place to keep any leftovers cold until we get home later. It would have gone to waste.

No. But I do tend to box up half immediately innsome resfaurants. Otherwise my husband tends to nibble it away.

Isnt that the truth? I have two runners. :scared1:
