Portion Sizes at The Wave?

Hi all,

Following up on a recent thread I posted about booking The Wave for my birthday dinner, I wanted to know what everyone thinks of portion sizes. Since our trip on October is on a budget, The Wave is a bit of a splurge on its own---so I'm wondering is entree sizes are big enough to split.

We'd probably do an app or two if we can't decide, the filet entree and a dessert. For a woman who is a 2 slice of pizza gal and a DH who is a former US Navy sailor and no light eater, is splitting realistic?

I've looked at some food reviews and the portions look big, but you really can't tell from pics sometimes.

Thanks!
Ann

The Wave is a great choice for a birthday dinner! Great food, nice atmosphere.

We ate there in May and found the portion sizes to fair -- not heaping portions like you'll see at chain restaurants, not comically tiny portions that you might find at really upscale restaurants. I think if you shared appetizers and dessert as well as the entree you would be fine. Though personally, I kind of like having my own entree...I might skip the apps and just do 2 entrees and dessert, but that's just me.

Have a great dinner! When we were there our waiter was Jimmy and he was lots of fun :)

Thanks for the info! I would skip the apps, but I have a feeling that once DH sees a crab cake on the menu, all bets will be off. :rotfl: We definitely don't expect a gigantic sized filet to come out, just wanted to make sure (like you said) they weren't comically tiny. We'll be on the Deluxe DDP in December and will have our fair share of chances to eat comically tiny food. ;)

For any normal restaurant meal, we split an app/entree/dessert or do our own entrees and split the dessert and it works well, so I wanted to make sure doing this in WDW wouldn't be any different.

Thanks again!!!

We ate at the wave in July and I had the filet. No, it's not shareable. It's the size of a deck of cards. I had the mashed potatoes with it. I had no problem eating it by myself. I had the crabcake for appetizer (dxddp) and it was not my favorite appetizer during the trip. I believe the desert was those tiny individual deserts, so again not shareable. Maybe you can choose something else on the menu. I find the filet at all of the restraurants is a small cut of meat (deck of card size). The only meal I've ever found shareable in WDW is the fried chicken meal at the 50s Prime Time. Other than that, there is no way my husband would be satisfied with sharing any meal in WDW. I'm not a big eater at all (mostly because I'm always dieting) and have not had any problem eating my deals while in WDW. After 20+ years of visiting I have watched the portion sizes continue to shrink -- or become normal size of what a person's portion should really be. We did the dxddp during that trip, but mostly we ate at signature restraurants during the entire week.

We have been there twice, loved it both times and I can tell you we cleaned our plates both times. We have also ordered appies and desserts and ate all of those too....left the place very full.

DH is a pretty big eater and he was very satisfied with the portions....he also finished what I couldnt

I don't find the meals big enough to share. Like another post said, we all finished our meals and dessert. We did not get an appitizer. Even my ten year old son finished his plate. Have a great trip

I just got back from the world, and have to say, The Wave was my absolute favorite meal of the trip! I got the cinnamon rubbed pork with veggies and fingerling potatoes and it was FANTASTIC!!!

Now, for your question...I ate the whole thing myself. :goodvibes My cousin got the chicken pot pie and ate almost the whole thing, and my mom got the flank steak and ate almost the whole thing. We had a late dinner though and were starving.

I hate to be the one to mention this :guilty:, but...If money is a big issue, maybe you should choose a different restuarant. I've never been to The Wave, but it does seem a little expensive. You could go to, say, the House of Blues at DTD, have a great meal and save some money...without sharing! Just a thought. :goodvibes

Whatever you decide, I hope you have a wonderful B'day!!

Doug

Those are definitely good points to think about. This is our plan for the Deluxe DDP also, a signature meal each night. Can't wait!

Thanks for the input. This is more what I was worried about. I don't want to do our own portions because of the fact that I don't want to be rolled out. We will be returning to the MK afterwards and we are looking for a filling (but not to the point of being stuffed) tasty meal.

Thanks. Our own separate entrees is a definitely an option, just looking at the menu and trying to figure out the best way to try a little bit of everything that looks good.

We had a late dinner though and were starving.

Our dinner will only be about 4 hours after lunch due to timing, so we definitely won't be starving and I hate the feeling of being absolutely stuffed to the gills.

Thanks for the input. Money isn't really an issue (we have it) so much as I tried to set a budget for this trip since we are splurging for our trip in December by doing the DxDDP. I'm more trying to keep this meal under $100. Maybe splitting an app, separate entrees for each and splitting a taste of dessert would be better than splitting the main part of the meal.

As mentioned to PPs, we'll be having a 1:00ish lunch and a 5:30 dinner---that coupled with the fact that neither of us like to be stuffed and I think we'll be a-okay. If we miss anything we really wanted to try, we'll be back for dinner in December again anyway. :)

If you plan to return to the MK, how about foregoing a dessert and getting something from the Main Street Bakery later on? I know when we dine in World Showcase or at an EPCOT resort restaurant, we always skip dessert and then hit the pastry shop in France once our meal has settled.

Now that might be the best input yet. :thumbsup2 The desserts at The Wave looked pretty cool, but none of the combinations seemed to really stand out about the rest. Main Street Bakery chocolate mousse cake here I come!!! :rotfl:
