I'm looking a little gadget that I can travel with me that will transfer pictures to a portable storage device...I would like to take some pics in the RAW mode and it takes up a lot of space, so how can I move the pics and store them in Raw and Jpeg without hauling a laptop around? Suggestions? Thanks!

I was considering a storage device like Epson's P2000 but these days a 2 GB CF card can sometimes be had for about $55. For about the same price as the Epson 40 GB you could get 20 GB of memory cards and not have to carry a storage device at all.

Flash cards are likely to continue to drop in price and it may not be long before they are even with a storage device. For now I plan to carry about 10 GB of cards, which should get me through a short vacation. For a trip of a week or longer I will still have to take the laptop (at 3 lb it isn't that much trouble).

Flash cards and CDs have one advantage, no moving parts thus much less chance of failure.

How much storage do you REALLY need? With approx US$200 (the price of the cheapest but reliable storage system + shipping) you can easily get about 6 Gb of SanDisk Ultra II CF cards.

That's about 1,400 photos at Superfine Large JPEG using an 8.2 MP camera at ISO 1600. At ISO 100 you can easily get about 1,500 photos. That's on top of the card(s) that you already have.

I must be the black sheep of the dis photo family..LOL

I own a 30 gig Delkin Picture pad and like it a lot, now granted I bought it when a 1 gig card could not be touched for under $125..

but then again I also like Paint Shop Pro,
and I am also buying a Minolta 7D tomorrow...

how about a portable hard drive? You can get them in many different sizes and not worry about losing a memory card since they are so small.

I have the Epson P2000 and love it. I don't have to worry if I lose any memory cards because I have downloaded the images.

I've been using these devices for some time now with good results. I love that I can download my photos to a small device and not have to drag around a laptop. You can actually get these things fairly cheap and you'll have 20+ gb of storage available to you. Look on the Adorama page under Digital -> Portable Storage Devices (http://www.adorama.com/). Also, look at the Costco.com page.
