Portable Heaters?

Does anyone have any experience with the portable room heaters you often see advertised in the magazine section of the newspapers. I have seen them advertised as Amish Mantle and heaters or EdenPure. They look too good to be true. TIA Grammy

I was wondering about them too. We use oil for our heat and I really don't want to start using it this early. I just want something to knock the chill off in the room.

My sister bought one last year and it did save a little on her heating bill. Mostly it took the chill from the room, she would have to roll it from room to room, but it was easy enough to do. Her cat loves to lay near it.

I've known people to buy the Amish Mantle heaters and they were NOT all they are cracked up to be.

We have the SunTwin and it is WONDERFUL. My parents also have one and saved more in the cost of oil than what electric it used in just one season. They also have the Eden Pure and it is also a wonderful heater. In fact I know quite a few people that have the Sun Twin and Eden Pure and I have not heard even one complaint about them. I ran my Sun Twin about 12-16 hours a day last winter and my electric went up $50/month. Since my oil furnace was not running any longer than 8-10 hours [during the evening] I'm sure we reaped a good savings in our heating costs.

My girlfriend has one. Here house is all electric and the heater is electric. She used it in the LR and the room was warmer than with the baseboards but the bill was slightly higher. I am not sure in her case if it was a wise investment, since she had zoning in each room. It would be a good idea if you did not have zoning and wanted to keep the temp down in other room and keep on cozy.

It was beautiful and well constructed.

I made sure to be one of the first callers at 9am (I'm in the Southeast) so there wouldn't be a wait due to the rush.

Mine was made and signed by Farmer Father John and is high quality... It keeps me so warm, that I cannot feel any cold from underneath the 2 sweaters and 4 blankets I'm wearing. If I need to move rooms, I put on my Snuggie and wheel the thing to the next room. Again, I feel no cold anymore.

I don't have one but do have some experience with them. My ex's grandparents believed in kerosene heaters. They worked well for them and they made sure to maintain them. On the other hand, my cousin had an electric space heater that she had placed between her bedroom door and her 7 month old little girl's room. It caught on fire in the middle of the night and the baby burned up. If you use a space heater, please be careful!!

:scared1: That is horrid.

I would never leave any space heater on when you are sleeping.

We have the Eden Pure (it is running right now) and we LOVE it:lovestruc. My FIL gave all the kids one for Xmas last year. It throws out enough heat to warm up one room. It is very quiet and the entire unit is cool to the touch so it is safe. It has saved us quiet a bit of money too! When DH or I come down in the morning, we turn it on and it warms up the living room enough for the kids to come down, have their breakfast, and get dressed. Once they are gone to school I shut it off. No need to turn on the entire heating system to keep my peeps warm in the morning. :)

I should probably clarify, my FIL gave my my husband and his brother and sisters them for Xmas (his kids) not the grandchildren (our kids) lol!

We tried the EdenPure. I can't really explain how, but it made the room feel warmer without actually raising the temperature if that makes sense.

Energywise it was pretty much a wash, maybe just slightly more, but comfort wise it was better.

Our inlaws gave us the Eden Pure last fall swearing it was going to save us all $$$$$. (For the record we live in MI, in a 1800sq foot open concept home.) Our normal electric bill is 55-65 a month. In November it was $98, I wasnt pleased but anyway... December was $125 and our house was still cold, January Dh was home alot and we hit $225. I blew when I opened the bill. We pay $60 a month in propane for our budget plan so the heater had added $160 to my monthly bills when Dh was laid off.

My mother in law kept swearing her bill didnt change, wasnt going up. I kept telling Dh there is NO way that is possible, they kept it on higher than us all the time. We turned ours off at night and down during the day. They were estimating her bill for 3 months, it caught up to her in Feb to over $600 for her little place.

YRMV but ours is sitting in the closet, I wont use it. Plus they paid almost $500 for them each, if your electric rates are really low maybe it would work but not for us in MI.

We bought an Eden Pure. It did make the room comfortable, but wasn't worth the $$ since it no longer works. I think it lasted 2 winters. There is no where local to take it. I think the closest place to get it fixed is 5hrs away.
