Portable DVD players

We have the Audiovox 7"Eddie Bauer model from Target, It's pretty good....hooked the kids Game cube up to it and all was peaceful. It is average, I guess...but we paid $235 for it, so kinda up there. Beware tho, Target has a policy of restocking fee 15% of purchase price if you buy it, try it and don't like it. We don't usually shop there due to this but neighbor had the same one for us to try out first. That is another problem, you can't actually try /hear it at Target. There are so many and more on the market each day...it can be nutty trying to decide. One that worked w/a game system was the deciding factor for us.
Good Luck!

Just bumping for some more replies. We're pricing these now also.

We got our ds 16 the initial 7 inch widescreen one from circuit city. It was about 259 after taxes and a 50 rebate I got. It has a remote and car adapter and about a 2 1/2 hour battery life. He has a long bus ride each day to school about 1 hour and he is the life of the bus. We leave for disney in 8 days and I know he is taking it on the plane.

we bought both DD's a cybermedia 7" screen one from Wal-Mart....it I think was 213.00

Walmart has a no hassle policy for returning electronics, within I believe 90 days...as long as you have receipt and box etc...

We were a bit leary, due to the price of how the sound and picture is/was....however we were soon very happy with the purchase.

It has a remote, and a carrying case that unzips and you secure it on the back of the seat in front of you.

DD's used them a few weeks ago on a car trip. they had their headphones on , and we never heard a peep.

One problem I have found with them...when they are secured in the case, on the seat, you can not change the DVD without unsecuring the player...which means DH or I have to do it..you cant just hit "open" as there is a velcrow strap that holds it in place...other than that they're great. And as DD's get older, they can swap their own movies, when they have the hand control to hold and open etc..

with this, the only fighting we hear is whose watching what movie, as they both have their own players.

You can also hook up PS2, or game cube or whatever, but they have gameboys so we wont be doing that.

oh- it's also either widescreen or fullscreen depending on what type of DVD your playing.

We love our DVD player!

It's especially great for long airplane trips - really cuts down on the boredom factor. We read for awhile, eat something, watch a movie and then it's almost time to land. Haven't tried it for car trips, because we usually fly if we're traveling a long distance, but knowing how much I hate long car rides, I'm sure it would be worth its weight in gold.

We bought our DVD player a couple of years ago, and technology changes so fast that it's probably not worth mentioning the brand we have, so I don't have any recommendations on that score.

But, have you thought about Netflix? Very reputable and easy way to rent DVD movies through the mail without worrying about late fees, which means (among other advantages) that you don't have to own the DVDs you take on a trip. The website is netflix.com if you're interested. In our day-to-day life, we don't miss all those runs to the video store one bit. ::MinnieMo

We have the Panasonic DVDLA95-I believe this has a new item number now.

We LOVE it.

It has a 9 inch screen, wonderful sound and wonderful picture.

I bought it one year ago and we have enjoyed it on 2 trips to Florida.

Of course, now we have a SUV with a DVD player so we don't really use it.

I paid around $599

i may pick one of these up. it looks like it has many advantages and since i have netflix i can rent movies just for the trip. thats a great idea donaldbuzz. im still i little bit hesitant when it comes to things like this. i think that its always because theyre comming out with bigger screens and stuff like that. and also im planning on putting a tv system in my ford taurus. :teeth: it still looks like it would be really good for a car ride down to florida. ill c whats out when i get the money together.

We have the Audiovox and USED to love it, especially since you can hook a second screen to it with a cable, or put both screens on cable and hang them on the back of the headrests rather than on the center console.

I say USED to because while in use on the way to Disney in December, the cord that runs from the player to the screen literally MELTED!! WHILE IN USE!!!

I of course called the company to report it and ask for a replacement cord. They said since it was outside the 90 day warranty I'd have to buy a new cord at $25 plus $7 shipping. When I mentioned the safety concern (it actually MELTED while in use....can you say overheated? can you say fire hazard?) she didn't care and wouldn't give me a number to call for safety issues.

The cable is proprietary meaning you can only get it from Audiovox, and now that one has melted, we're pretty uncomfortable using it that way, so we now use the screen attached to the player on the center console (and have an extra screen that we paid $200 for that we can't use).

Needless to say, if I had it to do over again, I WOULDN'T buy the Audiovox. And yes, I'm researching ways to complain about this unsafe product....

I got the polaroid 7" from Best Buy last fall.
I got a good deal. It was on sale for 200.00 plus had a 50 dollar rebate! The sound is not so good through the speakers and hard to hear in the car but plug in some headphones and the sound is great!
