Ok...here is the deal...planning a trip to Orlando.....3 days at Disney World and 3 days at Universal....this will be our children's first trip to Orlando....ages 8, 5, & 4.....already have reservations at the Royal Pacific at Universal so I am happy about that....our problem is which hotel to do while at Disney World...already have reservations for 3 nights at the Holiday Inn Family Suites for $102.50 a night (Entertainment Card rate)......I can get a rack rate of slightly over $200 a night at Port Orleans...also sent a request thru AAA to see what I can get thru them....

We will be going during one of the worst times of the year I believe....3/20-3/27....but oldest is on Spring Break then....

SO....taking in account the offsite vs onsite advantages and disadvantages....which way would you go with?

Me and my wife are going back and forth....

Many Thanks

You don't mention what time of year you're going, which I think would be important.

I'm a space freak. I need my space! And with 3 kids, the Disney moderates don't give you much of it.

You WILL need breaks in your day. If you're going at a peak period, you'd be well advised to stick with an on-property location. It will make getting back to the room for napping/swimming much easier, even though you'll pay more for less space. I'm thinking based on the price you quoted that you're going at a peak time.

However, if you're going at a slower time of year, I would stick with the Holiday Inn. Like I said, for much less money, you'll get much more space. And getting in and out of the parks for a midday break won't be bad at all if the crowds are low.

Assuming there are any AAA rates left, you'll probably end up with about $170/night for Port Orleans.

So I guess my answer is: if you're going during peak season, stay at Port Orleans. If you're going during a slower time, stay at the Holiday Inn Family Suites.

Thanks for your quick response...I edited my message to include the dates....3/20-3/27/04.....the dreaded spring break time.....

Your response is exactely what I am looking for...something I can show my wife so we can make a good decision....

I want the kids first trip to be special....

No problem!

Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, by Bob Sehlinger. His touring plans and tips will help you unbelievably to see as much as you can. Even when the crowds are at their worst, you can still have a great time. And I'm sure you will.

We stayed at HIFS in 2000 and loved it. We swore we would go back again and again. Then Disney had their Kids Play Free package and suddenly staying onsite looked great. Because we don't plan to go to any parks other than Disney, POR is great for us. However, if you're planning to head to Universal, I think HIFS is probably the best choice for you. You'll have free breakfast, a great pool for the kids and assuming you rent a car, will have the freedom to go to the parks when you want. Good luck with your decision!

I would suggest POR. This is our fave moderate resort, it is a lovely resort. Your children will love the experience there. Bus service to the parks is pretty good and they have the best foodcourt. We enjoy the boat to DTD. Sounds like you will be visiting US while at the RP so why not a Disney resort while visiting WDW. Disney resorts tend to be an extension of the magic you experience during the day at the parks and are unlike any other hotel you have stayed at.

It is also very easy to get back to the resort for a midday break such as a nap, lunch or a swim. Not to mention the early entry for Disney resort guest. Compared to staying off property where you are charged for parking each day, deal with the parking lot escapades, then have to board a tram and then perhaps another mode of transport to get to the park.

You might also want to order the free Disney Vacation Video/DVD. It will give you a good overview.

Here is a great site that give the pros/cons of on & off site hotels.

Because you are going during such a busy time, I would definitely stay on-site. It will make getting to the parks much simpler. If you have to drive, you'll be parked FAR away. And the shuttles from the off-site hotels are not nearly as conveinent as Disneys busses.
We stayed at HIFS in 1998. We LOVED the hotel. I'd like to go back, but would do it as a non-Disney vacation. Maybe do Sea World and Discovery Cove and lots of relaxing!!!
I would vote for paying a little bit more and having a little less stress - after all, this is a vacation!;) ::MinnieMo

You all are the greatest...everyone has stated some excellent points that has to be considered...this info is so valuable for a family making their first trip to the land of Disney...
