Hello,

I'm planning on visiting Disney in August. I will be staying at POR. We will be staying at a river view room. Where would you recommend we stay in the Mansions? Or alligator bayou? Please list pros and cons of each.

Thanks!

The buildings are identical in terms of room size and amenities so choose which style you like best. Alligator Bayou rooms do have a pull down bed for a fifth person but this reduces storage space. I think this is the only difference in room amenities. Riverside is a large resort so how far you want to walk to the main pool and food court might influence your choice. You have to leave your room to see the view from any room so personally I don't care about the view. I book a preferred room to be close to the food court. However. Buildings 27 and 38 have good river views from the second floor in the Alligator Bayou section. I've never explored the mansions section carefully enough to know about the views from them really. I would say from the map building 80 probably has the best river view rooms in the mansions section but that's a guess.

We've stayed in Magnolia and AB and liked AB much better. Magnolia has lawns and garden spaces that are more open and formal. AB is lush and tropical and feels mysterious.

Yes, it's a matter of taste. I would suggest looking at pictures of the theming on the room interiors and landscaping to help you decide. We love AB!

I love AB, inside and out. The rooms seem to have better theming than mansions IMO (unless you book a royal room). Of course it's a matter of preference, but to me the mansion rooms are a little on the boring side. I know some ppl don't like the rustic look of AB, but I think the extra little details add some Disney magic. (ie: carpet that looks like wooden planks, lantern lights over beds, Murphy bed made to look like crate when folded up with mural of Louis the aligator when open, etc) I do think the grounds of mansions are really pretty, and I saw in pictures that some fountains are lit up with colored lights at night. So like someone else mentioned, check out pictures and see what you prefer.

The reasons I might give you for loving a particular area could be exactly the reason someone hates that area! It's very subjective.
I love the AB area, towards the rear of the complex. It's so quiet and peaceful. I love the overgrown feeling. But....the more formal mansion areas are lovely as well. It's really a case of six of one, half dozen of the other.

I like the preferred rooms in the AB section. So conveniently close to everything! My favourite choice in POR. Request ground floor if you don't want to do one flight of steps.
If you like the mansions, there are four which, starting with Parterre Place at the end closest to POFQ, go from more formal to less formal. Parterre Place and Oak manor are the first two and are the buildings which house the Royal Rooms. The next two mansions are Magnolia Terrace and Acadia Place (I think?) and have the 'regular' mansion room design. These two house standard rooms and are closer to the main pool than the RR.
Of the RR Mansions, Parterre Place is the most elegant, but Oak Manor is slightly closer to the main building.
AB buildings are only 2 stories high and do not have an elevator. Magnolia Bend mansions have a centrally located elevator.

If you are standard view, I would choose the theme that I liked best. If extra $$ is available, I would choose preferred in AB or pool view in RRs.

Enjoy!

Are all the rooms refurbished at POR? Or is there so old clunkers there?

We just stayed in Oak Manor in a Royal Guest room and Love Love Loved it. So much so that there isn't a question of where we will stay next. I stayed in AB as well and the preferred rooms were a bit closer but we never felt like the walk was bad. I cant wait to go back.
