Which are the best rooms to stay? If you booked a standard room would it help to ask if there is any upgrade available.

There are several booking categories for POR; you can check out the categories and the rates and decide what works for you. You can book a standard view, but then upgrade later if you get a discount, if it is not doable at this point.

The standard view gives you parking lot views or woods views. I had a parking lot view from Acadian House one year and a woods view from Oak Manor; both rather nice and secluded.

Then there are the courtyard views, waterview, riverview, preferred (closest to the main building), royal rooms and king bed rooms.

Is there a way to tell where you room would be by what you booked. I looked at my reservation and it just says King Bed and it says it would be less for garden view.

We had a king room at POR. King rooms are all over the resort, so you can be anywhere. If you switched your reservation to garden view, you would get a room with two queen beds. If you want to keep your king bed, you should call and add a request for garden view or whatever view you want. But keep in mind a request is not guaranteed.

There is no way to know ahead of time what your room will be as most room categories are all over the resort. You can pretty much know you will have a room facing the river if you book river view. That's about as much confirmation as you can get.

I had a river view room at POR for our last trip, and we liked it. We were in the mansions overlooking the pool.

My fav locations at POR is either Acadian House or Magnolia Terrace, near quiet pool- which is close to the bridge over to Old Man Island, and a short walk to main building.
I book a Garden view because I don't want a parking lot view, and it's not much more.

If you want to upgrade, I'd try to do it before you arrive. A GV is only a few dollars a night more. There may be no avail. if you leave it to arrival.
